i— ggi? — ■ — ■- - J . i The County Gazette*. •; C ALFRED COOPER, Edito*. ~T SATURDAY, JUNK 5, 1880. IB, . .. .. . LI J 11 Our faurmert oun not be too careful in uiit| Pack green on |*>uto vine* near their strawberries. A child of Mr. Win. Bigek>wt of V ineland nearly died a few day* ago from being poieoned by the Park green on aome straw bemee it had X eaten. Other eaaea are frequently reported to us of similar nature. * » e « We were in error in our last issue when we said that "yearly meeting" would be held on Saturday last. It is to be held the second Saturday in June and poesibly on the Sunday following. We intended to publish a lengthy article this week bearing upon the time honored custom, of celebrating the Hjairersary of the Baptist church, but lack of time prevents our doing so. • ♦ * ,f u It is with pleasure that we note the ri kind Christian spirit which prompted the pastor and members of the Ifeptist church to give up their regular services and attend the Sunday School Celebration at the Methodist church on Sunday evening lost, thus making a union service of it. In many towns there exists a feeling of oontemptible dislike, almost amounting to hatk, between those who . are professed christians but differ atigbUv upon some particular points of ' V 0utne c»w ntfe, is snown by the liberal action abeve mentioned. It is not necessary that we should sacrifice our particular tenets or views, upon minor points, in order to experience the grandeur of true Christian union. There will be no sects in heaven, and if we expect to agree there we must exhibit a liberality of opinion on earth. We publish in another column the resolution which announces the "break up" of the well known Millville hmur- . aoce Company, and it is with sorrowthat we do so for this company stood high, at one time, not only in the public eye but among its cotemporary companies. Founded as it was in the heighth of the "Hush times," and by men whose names were above suspicion, it Wilt up u. l*»^ business in a few years and hod come to be looked upon with pride, as one of tho features of South Jdrsey business circles. As the company grew in importance it began to launch out heavily in the West, and for awhile this branch of the business bid fair to be a grand success, but suddenly the current reversed and loss after loes, some of them very heavy, was sustained and things got worse and worse until in 1879 tho directors were obliged to order on assessment of 5 per cent upon the premium notes of the policy boldeis. If we romember aright the total-sum assessed was in the neighborhood of $00,000; of which all but about $4,000 was promptly paid. With this sum we believed the company could bridge over the threatened break and eome out all right, but business continued to grow worse until Saturday lost when the directors decided to close Up the business st once. We would advise those who are ineured in this company to keep very cool and not allow their excitement to prompt rash speeches, as the affairs are now in the hands of the Chancellor and will be adjusted to the best interest of all concernod. _ The Working Women of New York are thus spoken of in Harper for June, by William H. Ridening . Women are employed in and about the city in "staining and enameling glass ; in making glass signs : in cutting ivory, pearl, and tortoise-shell; working in guttapercha, gum-elastic, and hair; making willow-ware and cane chairs; feeding printers1 presses and setting type ; making and packing candles ; moulding tablets of water-colors ; assisting in the manufacture of chemicals and fire- work a ; making clocks, enameling dials, and painting the coses ; finishing baekgnrrtmoo boards ; making and dressing dolls end toys ; stitching the cloths and making the pocket of billiard tables : paint* ing the handles of brooms, and weaving twine into netting ; making paper collars and twine ; burnishing jewelry and making buttons. There aro about five hundred millinery houses in the city, employing over two thousand milliners, ana the manufacture of straw hats engages several thousand women in weavs.i .» h. employ* w four thousand women, runny of them French, and it is as lucrative to adept hands as any other. The manufacture of hoop-skirts is said to engage over ten thousand women, who spool the ootton, weave the tape, and cover the eteel ; and the cap trade givea employment to many more thousands, whose earnings vary from three to five dollars a week. The weaving of hahr cloth fa also done by women, the packing of eonfeotkmary, and the making of shoe •pptn"

The e> ercises were all good and the order perfect, both in the school and audience. One little girl in particular, claimed our just admiration — for her modest, retiring manner. and for her dear pronunciation and carofully accented words ; not a particle of that sing-song note that too often clings to children of larger growth. We should not be surprised if the song — "Polly the cows are in the corn," caine home to more than one farmer' '* daughter just the time of year for that -cry to begin. " j THE FINEST STORE.
