The people of Tuokahoe are to have a grand celebration ou the 4th of July. Is there not patriotism enough in Middle towuship to got up a real old fashioned celebration ? The finest piece of wheat we have seen in this county is that of Captain Richard Godfrey of Tuckahoe. The Captain evidently understands farming as well as navigation. Can you afford to be without insurarice, when your property can be insured at so very low rate, in good reliable stock companies by applying to James L. Wilson, Esq., Millville? When the beach party landed on Tuesday evening and received the news that Garfield was nominated, the rousing cheers made us think there were few 3rd termers in the party. • Considerable excitement in town on Saturday afternoon last, occasioned by some of the workmen on the Angleaoa railroad getting outside of more tanglefoot than they could successfully managb. James L* Wilson of Millville, represents the oldest Insurance company in the United States. The Insurance company of North America was incorporated in the year 1794, and now has six mil lions of dollars, in cash, to pay losses. Mr. Alonzo Hewitt has been appointed Census Enumerator for the Middle Township, and Is now on hi* rounds. We hope the people will assist him by answering freely any question* which he may ask. No one need hesitate fer fear of their neighbors finding out the family secrets, as the law enjoin* prlvucy upon the Census taker, and is also very hard on those who refuse to give him the information he desire*. The Tint beach party of the season from the Court House, took place on Tuesday last on tieven Mile Beaoh. About SO of the ycaing ladies and gentleman of the town put in an appearance at Holmes' landing at an early hour, and set sail for the brnftch where the party arrived about 10 o'clock. Out on the Kn4 of the Northern Pa clfio the yield of wheat last year ws» 6,000,000 bushels, this year it is estima ted at 10,000,000. This does not look much like famine. In the Uuited States 100,000 bushels of hemp seed are annually oonsumed for bird food alone. A great portion of this is imported, The statistic* do not say bow much the value of the birdb foots up. Onions cut fine and mixed with meal, is an excellent food for chickens and turkeys. They arc not only Tory fond of it, but it serves as an antidote to the many ills to which they are subject. Use both top* and bottoms. Not one in twenty of the numerous patent rights hawked through the country by agents, are worth a red cent. Farmers should always give them a »: in m - -a,.. ~ - -* •*" Many have learned this lesson — gat too — by sad experience. The wheat crop of our county looki much more promising that it did a month ago. The drouth has shortened the heads, but the berry now in the milky state, is full and plumj p. Vfjtfa m ten days more of favorable weather it

will be out of danger. The corn crop is growing finely. While corn is young, dry weaiher.is favorable to its growth ; stir the ground often, nnd we may expect a good crop. Potato bugs and army worms are just now making sad havoq among the ciops in many localities inour^ounty. What the bug leaves, the worm devours, so that bet ween the two the farmers fare slim. "He oa n conquer the former with Paris green, but the latter defies all remedies, and the worm still goes •'marching on." Where they come from is a mystery, but what they eat is plain to be seen. They seem to be very destructive to fresh grass ami wheat. Tlicy are a novelty here in South Jersey, but one which we hope will never again appear. OYSTER PLANTING ASSOCIATION. At the annual meeting of the Oyster Planting Association, held at Sharp's store, June 5th, 1880, Eugene Cole was elected President, and Stephen Parsons. Secretary for the ensuing year. Perhaps the object of this Association is not generally understood, and a brief explanation may be of interest to the public. The thefts among oyster beds become so common, that the business must be abandoned or some plan devised to more effectually protect tho interests of the oyster planter. About two years *ince a meeting was called and the present society organized. The object is mutual protection from the raids of oyster thieves. Over 11,00(1 bushels are represented by the members, mostly in Ludlam's Sound and tho adjacent creeks and thoroughfare*, although it is designed to include tho whole county.

A standing reward of 50 dollar* is offered to any person producing evidence sufficient to convict in our courts, tho individual found stealing oysters from any of the members, each one being bound to pay the reward and cost* of prosecution, In proportion to the amount Of oyster* planted by each member prorata assessment on the buslicl. Tho complaints of theft* have been far le*s tricot the organization of this society than before, nnd it I* considered a great success. The Association is determined to follow up, to the extent of the law, all depredation* of this kind, whenever sufficient evidonce shall be produced to warrant conviction. Any person in the county may become a member by signing the by law* and paying 25 cents. For further information inquire by mail, or otherwise, of the President, Eugene Cole, at Seaville; or 8tephen Parsons, Secretary, Ocean View. LA* AVDOkukr. Ocba* View,- Jusm 5m, 1880. Rrchavite. — ♦ ♦ » For the Gazette. . PHILADELPHIA LETTER. Ji nf. 9, 1880. The nomination of James A. Garfield as the candidate for President, by the Chicago Convention, is received with great joy by the intelligent voter* of the

Quaker City. It is no more, however, than was to be expected under the circumstance*. When there are two ! candidates for nomination, before a convention, both having a largo partisan ! support, it very often happens thnt neither is elected. The reason is plain : J If both sides were to adhere to their candidate* and were to receive no aid Irani scattering votes, there could be I no nomination at all ; and, therefore, thora must be a break ol some kind ; those who break will not of courtte go <»ver to their partisan enemies, but will rather take up some candidate upon j whom a consolidation can be made and who will be apt to give them a fair deal of Uie spoil*. The census enumerators began their work June 1st, under the supervision of .Ed. T. Steel, the new appointee ; and from the character of the men employ- | ed we arc promised as truthful an account < of Our city as can be had. Two human brutes, — Goes and Ryan, of this cfry, pounded each other into s ; jelly at Colliers Station, in Weal Virginia last weak. It would be forgotten I rave from the fact that Henry Clay, a member from the IGiL Word, charges, before a committee which he had appointed, that Daniel W. Gilbert, another member, offered hizn iff cash and Rapid Transit stock for his vote and influence in poshing the matter. THE TELEPHONE. The wonders of this discovery through the inventive genius of Edison, must be seen and heard to be properly appre- j I elated. Being in the city a abort time | rince, and in the ware room* of Kendall j k Co., on North Second street, I was ' i asked the question whether I had ever Keen a telephone in operation ? I answered in the negative. "Then come a^ong with me to Arch i street, below Second, and you can see ; one in working order." The gentleman in a few moment*, introduced me to the I firm of Stewart, Ralph A Co., e> tensive tobacco manufacturers, making a special- • of article of snuff in all !•» ! - * * . ^ ' - - A- • ^ df* ^ ^^kj* T entirely at home. He proceeded at once to permit u* to inspect tjie telephone, j wbich tlicy had in operation [in asumpt- ! uously furnished office.] in oonnectio'n j with their factory, which is located in : the upper part of Richmond — over twr. miles distant. One of the firm ap proached the instrument, a- small box. !>erhaps 8x12 inches in dimension*, and j giving a few turn* of a crank which

made a noise something like the alarm of a clock, although less demonstrative, then picking up a short trumj^et attach , ed to the machine, and placing it to his ear, he immediately put himself in communication with, and received an answer from the foreman : "What can 1 do lor you?" "How are vou getting along?" "How is buHlness ? "Very fair, I thank you air V lie then directed tlio writer to talk to the foreman, when, placing my mouth within about six inches of the front of the instrument, I opened a ; pleasant com*er«ition with him, receivi ing dhtinct answer to all questions | asked, within three to five seconds after they were propounded. Another of the firm then approach**! j the instrument and a.-ked the foreman ! if he could not give them a f-ong, when placing the trumpet to my ear, I re ceived in answer that he was not an adept in the art, but would get one of 1 the young Indies of the factory to favor u* in that line. When in n few me ments there came over the wires from n melodious and well trained voice, « -on g which would have been creditable i to n prima donna, and as distinctly m* though she had been in an adjoining ' room. It was suggested that one with such ti fine voice as that, and with such power to command it. mu*t be beautiful and no doubt lo\4ible, and a proposition l»eing made to investigate the merits of | the ease further, wc were informed that that instrument was kept for H'i ivKys transactions only, and that noth ing like a courtship could be permit feci over the wires ; an animated di^ussion aixwe as to whether a m ark ation wa^

This question was not decided when u tap at the instrument, from the fore man. announcml a dispatch which beinj: upon ihc clailv routine oi business, w«v duly recorded in a journal kept for the purport*.
