j agree to all our notions of farming, and what wo desire is to improve our present system of funning if possible, and present the agricultural interests of Cape j May in their true light, and this can only 1 be done by a full and free interchange I of opinions based upon the experience | and intelligence of the farmers them- : selves. »Sjmd in the items. Contribuj tions to this department from all part* j of the county, or out of the county are earnestly solicited. A Berlin dispatch to the Times savs: j "The papers are again full of disheartening reports of the harvest in Silesia, Posen, and East and West Prussia. The : crops in certain districts in these provI io l»o wnKnltw B ed. Lives have been lost, railway and . river embankments have been swept | away, bridges broken down, villages fi<H»ded, farms inundated and vast tracts | of grain-growing land converted into ! lakes and swamps by torrents of rain, 1 while a great famine is feared in all the above-named provinces." The correspondent of the Timf.s, who j penetrated tho furthermost parts of I Silesia, estimates that in one potato • district alone the damage done amounts j to the sum of 150.CKK) mark*, while 2,000 acres of arable land and pasture ground were inundated by the overflow of the Oder. In tho neighborhood of Oppeln 3,000 acres of potato fields are covered with water. Whole clumps of villages are isolated. Tho rain was so violent that in a few hours tho river Ncisso rose six feet". In Posen an immense' expanse of meadow is inundated. Not only is tho grain destroyed, hut* straw also. Jt is fenrcd that in some places tho wetness of the ground may disastrously delay or altogether prevent its preparation for next year's seed. In tho. District of Kulm, West Prussia, twenty-hours of rain completely mined the harvest, especially wheat. In some parts of East and West Prussia tho fields aro so impassable that it is impossb ble to garner tho remaining grain. Potatoes are beginning to rot. It will thus appear tluit the official estimate of I tho Gorman harvest prospects recently published will have to bo greatly lowered. Ryo is almost wholly destroyed. Wheat and barley have little surviving value in the market. For the laboring portion of tho community the damage to the potatoe crop is the most serious, and tho aid of tho Government is idI ready being earnestly invoked. - ^ -■> ♦ Senator James G. Blaine will make 1 seven speeches in New Jersey (luring | the campaign, the first in Newark, Sepj t ember 23d.
