It is supposed that she clutched at the table as she fell and upset it, throwing the lamp to the floor. Mrs. ShenpArd, who lives next door, discovered an uuusua] light in the parsonago and rushed to the door which she found locked. After effecting an ontrance she discovered the carpet to bo on fire ; also some newspapers and the settee. Tho burning things were thrown out of doors and thus a serious conflagration, and probably a loss of life, was avoided by the prompt action of Mrs. Shep|>ard. SEAVILLE CAMP GROUND. The lecturer of the evoning. Prof. H. W. Hand, departed from the usual formal style of such exercises, and told u* "Something o! Things at Iforao and Abroad in New Fields,'* in his congenial ' | conversational way. lie exhibited many interesting curiosities collected in his tiiivola ; one of which was a fragment of (he "sea-face" of Fort Sumpter ' in '64. lie gave mi interesting account of a night boat-attack made on tho Fort and described the manner in which Union prisoners were treated. Ho also i paid a tribute to tho memory of a former comrade. Lt. Com. Williams, late of the 4tOneida. ' He then described the fort which the Spaniards built in the strait of Magellan in 1530, for tho purpose of preventing other nations from visiting the Pacific. Refuted theories which he had heard aliout the Patagonians, and j remarked the extensive use of fables, or lessons derived from them, in modern times. He showed the manner in which the Putagonian* use tho lasso; said a I portion of them live exclusively in boats, teep a fire burning continually, will wear no clothing except one scanty native garment. They bafflo all at tempts of missionaries to make them comprehend the truths of Christianity. The speaker defended this mode of eating by saving that each person ate all that his own finger touched. He had the satisfaction of eating no<; with them and innocently pronounced it mutton. These natives eat raw fish and are not slow to remind us that w© eat raw oyster*. The whole lecture was full of interest.
