• » —■ nfcTi iMJIITIW I ll ■ fTl mTIl Th 4 Potato Bug and Tobacco Smoke. When the Colorado Potato Beetle rem-hud the Atlantic but**, the -Euro* |»ean count riot woro naturally alarmed lest it should croM the oositn iu it* devastating inarch. In ftonie countries )*Ws were p*b*t»<t oxeluding all American potatoes, not knowing tho habit* of the insect. The Hermans, with their j usual good seme, saw tliat the most im- ! jioruint thing to do was to aoquaint tho i farmer* with the appearance of the erie* j my, $o that, should it eh moe to appear among thorn, it could ho detected at ouce and measures taken for ita destruction. \Vhon in Germany, u few months ago, wo learned that a prixo had been offered, cither by the government or by some ugriculturul society (we are not suro which), for the host method of f^iliarizi^ig the farmers with the appearmnco of the insect. One person, recognizing tho fact that smoking was almost universal omonij the farmers and farm laborers, suggested the idea of docorating the pipes oK the smokers with a pictorial history of the insect. This person received the prize, and wc are informed that so great waa the salo of tho pipes that he suddenly grew rich. However this may be, no pipes were to lo found on sale at the time of our visit. At Stmsburg wo met our old friend, Dr. J . T. Kothrock, of Philadelphia, who was passing his vacation there in botanical investigations, and he happened to have on© of these entomological pipes, which ho generously gave up to u* for illustration. The pipo is of tho stylo common in the j country, and carries on its surface ft complete history of the Potato Beetle. Of course an engraving cannot show the whole surface ; a potato, louf is given, with the eggs, tho lurvfc or grubs in two or three sucuh of growth, tho chrysalis, i at:d the perfect insect, in two views. , All the* a ar© in their proper colors, and each stage distinctly labelled. So well is this dono, that wo havo no doubt j that tbo German farmers, who happily nover saw tho Potato Beetle, li^vc a clearer knowledge of the appearance of the insect in its different stagos of egg, larviCj chrysalis, and imugo, than have some of our own farmers who havo slain thorn by wholesale. — American Aoui01 LT (RUT. » + ♦ Prince Rudolph's Wedding. \ TUB RCCBN'T IMPERIAL qi.'ARKEL WITH THE VIENNA LOWER COUNCIL. A correspondent, writing from Vion- j na, says : The time is drawing near' when the Crown Princo Rudolph will i marry the Belgian I'riucets Stephanie, i and grand preparations were made for the festivities which usually accompany an event of this kind. Tho Town Council bad abandoned tho idea of a proces- , flion, because it was difficult to attain anything resembling tho ono in honor * of tho Emperor's silver wedding, and ( unpleasant comparisons would certainly 1 have been drawn. So it whs decided to ' eubstituto a grand ball in the opera bouse, a fancy ball, at which fifty young Vienna maidens in medi&ral costumes wero to present the products of the city's industry to the newly married couple. About 70,1)00 florins were considered sufficient for tho expenses. I.nrgo or- ' ders had botn given to tradesmen of all kmds and everybody was iu high expectation. Suddenly rumors began to circulate that tho Crown Princo Rudolph had ordfrod the furniture, jewels, pictures and other works of art necessary for his new household from overy where but in Austria. The Town Council could not piwa these rumors unnoticed and it sent a deputation with llioburgoir»a»dor at tho head to tho Minister of the Imperial Household, lo ask whether* there was any truth in tho rumors, Princo Holionloho denied everything, but in co vague and hesitating a man ner tli At thu Town Council felt its sus picions wcro rather confirmed than romoved. Several very stormy sittings ensued, during .which the opera-house bill was not mentioned. Then several Vienna firms announced through the papers that thoy kad received order* from the imperial house for glass, china, carriages, linen and so on, hut none mentioned tho dato of tho orders. Tho Minister of tho Imperial Household sent un explicit declaration And a li*t of all tho things that had boon ordered in Vienna, as well as tho explanation that tli u French firm om ployed had almost none but Austrian work-people in its service. The Town Council then voted that it would thank the Emperor for having deigned to give this explanation, but there wan a long discussion whether in the loiter of thanks tho Mayor should sty that the explanation had "satisfied" them, or whether thoy simply 'Hook notice" of it. Tho latter words were those approved and used. The Emperor of course was offended at this iniorforonce, and begged tho Town Council to give up* the plan of the fete At the opera house and devote the money io the poor of Vienna. He would add tothoMimhy contributing 40,000 florins. Ro there is to btfio bull, no ptlblie rejoicing, and tho poor »re tho only ones to whom this marriage will he a sourco of undivided pleasure. The orders that had b©en given to tho tradespeople have all been withdrawn, and the eommictoo for the , garni fu<» has be«u dissolved.

J ARM AN, msytt, OAK HALL, PHILADELPHIA. Worth Knowing , ' There Is a place In Philadelphia where a stranger may buy his clothes, and fare as well as if he knew the whole city by heart ; and if lie knows nothing about the value of cloths, or of clothes, he is as well off, as if he were a good judge of both. The reason is that everything to be found there is made there— made and sold under a system which rarely allows mistakes to occur, and which corrects them, if they do occur. Oak Hall is the place; and ks practice may be I

~ m— '.Jl J- .. ' t_J_J — - summed up in a few words. If you get there wliat you don't want to keep at the price, you return it, and get your money back. This means a great deal more than appears on the surface. It means that you are not going to get what you will not want to keep at the price, if the merchant can help it It means that the clothes you get there will be of honest cloths, honestly made; and that they will cost you less than as good clothes can be got for elsewhere. It means that they will be every way better worth your money than you can get elsewhere for the same money. If it means anything less than these things — if it means poor cloths, trimmings, cutting, sewing, or in any way dishonest or illiberal dealing; the return of his goods will plague the merchant, injure nis credit, and dissipate his trade. If it means these things— If it means liberal and honorable dealing, valuable and trusty clothing, ease and safety in getting it, Oak Hall is the place for you to go to, or to send to ; and it is worth j your while to know how you j can send, if it is inconvenient j to go. Write; say what your occupation is ; say what " | sort of use you intend to make of the clothes you want, whether for cvery-day wtfar or otherwise ; what color you prefer, or what color to avoid ; say about what you want to pay ; say everything that you think may aid a stranger in choosing for you. You will get in reply samples of cloths and prices of whatever you want made from those cloths. You will get also the means of having your measure taken by an unskilful person. There is only one difficulty left. Somebody has got to take the risks of the i dealing ; for there are risks. Send your money along with your order. That covers the risk as to your good faith. We risk everything else ; the fit, and j j your satisfaction every way. Our trade by mail amounts to half a million dollars a year; there's no reason why* it shouldn't amount to five millions. ; I *" Wanamaker & Brown.
