Several have professed conversion. A slight fire occurred at the residence of Mrs. Perry, Mechanic street, on Sunday morning last, caused by a dirty chimney. The township committee met at the Uuion Hotel on Saturday last and settled up the accounts of collector Henry W.Hand. Mrs. L. T. Entricken is very low with an attack of fever. She is at the residence of her mother, Mrs. Souder, in this village. Capt. Henry w. Hand has given entire satisfaction—to the mabsxs— ss tax collector and there is no reason why he should not be re-elected. The last dodge of sharpers is to induce unwary farmers to sign an alleged temperance pledge, which subsequently proves to be a promissory note. Success to hitn in his new field. — Mr. John Ingersoll met with a painful accident on Friday last. He •and Fred, Peterson were engaged in dressing a beef for U. M. Dare, the butcher, and as Peterson was splitting the carcass his knife slipped and cut Ingersoll's nose off and his oye out. Dr. B. F. Abbott is attending the iiyured man and fears he will lose the sight of his other eye. •—About seven o'clock on Sunday morning last the town wan aroused by tlio cry of fire, and upon investigation it was found tlint the pleasant residence of Mr. Hiram Godfrey on the Atlantic side was in flames. All effort* to extinguish the fire were in vain and the 1 house together with all the contents i were totally destroyed in a short time. In trying to save some of the furniture Mr. 6. wax badly burned, and the rest

of tho family barely escaped with their lives. Beside the furniture there was $50.00 cosh in the house and was consequently lost. The origin of the fire was a defective flue in the chimney.. The good people* of the village made up a purse of about $300 for the unfortunate I family. Ubiquitous. — The Knickerbocker Joo company < are filling their house with ice about a foot thick. They receive 30 car-loads a day, and tho fact that the work is done under direction of Supt. Griffin is a guarantee that it will be done right. — On Friday night last the city fathers, in Council convened, killed the ordinance which granted tin? right of way to the D. 11. and Sewcll Point Railroad to lav track* through our streets. The greater part of our citizens are wondering what will bo done next toward ruiniiy: tho prosperity of our city, — About 1 o'clock on Sunday aftor noon the church-going part of the community were startled from their houses : of worship by the shrill whistle of a steam-tug near the shore.
