Wildwood Catholic led at the half 28-23 but Middle overtook them in the third quarter and pulled away in the fourth. Middle showed a great improvement since losing to Wildwood Catholic at home and now have developed into a well-rounded team which should surprise many of their remaining opponents. Chuck Ludman has confidence in his team and really expected to beat Wildwood Catholic this time. Middle Township ran its winning streak to 5 by beating Buena 65-48 on Tuesday night. Jaybird Watkins led the scorers with 14 points, while Rewi Thompson had 13 and Dave Spauling and Lee English 11 each. For Buena, Al Perry led the scorers with 15, while Rob Perry had 14 and Mel Crouch 8. Middle led at the half 33-18 and controlled the game in the second half. Next game for Panthers is with Wildwood at home on Friday night.
GIRLS BASKETBALL Although most of the emphasis is on the boys basketball team at Middle Township High School, it should be noted that Coach Big Bill Penman's "Lady Panthers" are now 4-1, having won the last 4 games in a row. The outstanding Pantherettes are Laurie Budd, a junior who made the All-Star Team last year as a sophmore; she leads the team in scoring and rebounds; Sophmore Sue McKinley who was high scorer against Lower Cape May, and Junior Amy Brockman who is the playmaker of the team. In the finals of the Christmas Tourney held at Middle Township High School, the Lady Panthers beat the Lady Falcons of Oakcret by a score of 36-35 Laurie Budd was high scorer for Middle with 19 points, Sue McKinley had 10, Kris Salvesen 5, and Arlene Adens had 2 points. For Oakcrest, Vicki Romano had 14 points. Coach Penham said "the team made the basket when it counted. The whole team came of age in this game and played as a team on defense."

SIDELINE SHOTS By The Old Sport Once again taking up his pen after the happy holidays, the Old Sport feels obliged to take to task the Athletic Department ' of Middle Township High School for the poor quality of 4he trophies which were awarded to the winners of their first annual Christmas Tourney. Although it’s true that Girls Basketball does not attract the*crowds that the Boys’ Game does, that does not justify giving out a Tourney Team Trophy that looks like it cost $4.98 and a Most Value Player Trophy that could only have cost $1.98. Coach Penman was glad that his team won the trophy and spared him the embarassment of awarding to another team. And the Oakcrest team took off without even waiting for their Most Valuable Player to receive her trophy. If there are to be such awards let’s do it up right and spend some money for awards. If the School Board doesn’t have, the money, perhaps the Kiwanis or Optimist Clubs could sponsor the tournament and do it
properly.
Seen at the Wildwood Catholic Christmas Tourmey was Walter George, Airman at the Air Force Academy. A fine representative of Middle Township High School, he attended Boys’ State at Rider College while a Junior. He looks great. .*** New football coach Phil Exley is expected to announce his choice of the remaining two assistants for next year’s team on Jan. 21st. Rumor has it that “Killer” Kaign, a teacher at Elementary School No. 3 is under consideration. He has it good background in playing football and only lacks coaching experience. *** A group of 50 people from his area will go- up to Phila. on the 23rd of Jan. to see the Syracuse-Temple basketball game. It will afford a chance for his fans to see Ricky Harmon playing at the Big Time College level. Jack Hand is promoting the chartered bus trip.
