Exley, who has coached the freshman team for three years and had a 7-0 and 5-2 record the last two years was chosen to succeed. John Roberson who retired after a 6-3 record this year. Exley brings a tremendous amount of enthusiasm to his new job which is certain to carry over to his players, all of whom were delighted with the choice of coach. Mr. Exley has already picked Brian (The Tea Man) Tetley and Norm Smith as his assistants for next year and the trio will sit down and pick two more assistants in January. Phil Exley comes from a football family, his father having played in high school, and he has a younger brother, Michael, who showed great promise in high school until his career was cut short by a knee injury, and also has two younger brothers coming along. At 7 years of age

Phil was playing organized football in a Pop Warner League in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He went on to play four years of varsity football at North Hunterdon Regional High School. He then went on to play varsity ball at West Chester State in Pa. and came to Middle Township High in 1976, where he coached the freshman team for three years while on Coach Roberson’s staff. Coach Exley is excited about having assistant coaches Tetley and Smith on his staff. He expects to sit down with them and talk about the future of Middle Township football. He says he is encouraged with the personnel on the squad he has to work with and knows well those on the three freshman teams he has coached. Young, knowledgeable about football and with great enthusiasm for his job, Phil Exley should give Middle Township. football fans something to look forward to in the future.

ADULTS VOLLEYBALL After a holiday hiatus the Middle Township Mens Adult Volleyball League, sponsored by the Recreation Dept, resumed action at the 4-H Sports Center on Tuesday night, with Kiwanis, Sheriffs Dept, and Acme emerging as the victors. This league has proved to be tremendously popular with the six teams involved, with a good turnout by each group. When the new basketball backboards are installed, it may be possible to form a basketball league for the younger and stronger adults! This Sports Center is filling a long-needed facility for the community as it was next to impossible to get the use of the high school or Middle School for outside activities.
