Kiwanis Court House Christmas Program
At its last dinner meeting on Dec. 21st, the Court House Kiwanis Club entertained the exchange students of Middle Township High School at a Christmas program sponsored by Steve Chase, Chairman of Spiritual Aims of the Club. Introduced by Principal Edmund Webb were Carsten Schulze, West Germany; Minna Ylikangas, Filand; Palle Neilson, Denmark; Tina Nebo, Liberia; and Patty Fuentes, El Salvador. Absent was Rewi Thompson from New Zealand, who was playing on the Middle Township Basketball Team. Since it was also a Ladies Night, the program, which consisted of the exchange students telling of Christmas in their native countries and then answering questions from the audience, was greatly enjoyed by the Kiwaniennes. Gifts of sets of U.S. coins were presented to each exchange student by President Greg Willis and Christmas carols were sung under the leadership of Frank
Ross and Gil Sinkway and to the accompaniment of Steve Chase at the piano. The tables were beautifully decorated with red tablecloths and poinsettias and a delicious buffet was served by
Stella Luke, the regular Kiwanis caterer.
Bill Lockwood was presented a check for $500.00 for new basketball backboards for 4-H Foundation, to be installed at their Exhibition Hall on Dennisville Rd. The consensus was that it was one of the nicest dinners of the year. Homeowners Question Avalon Expenses Johb Halbe, representing the Avalon Land and Homeowners, questioned a number of borough expenses in the public portion of the December 27 meeting of the Avalon Commissioners. The Homeowners had scrutinized the bills of the N.J. Bell Telephone Company, and questioned the large amounts budgeted for this expense. They suggested that long distance calls made to venders for purchases be made collect, which is a common practice in business. They also suggested that outgoing calls be logged to keep a better check on why they are being made. Mayor Ellsworth Armacost and the Commissioners thanked Mr. Halbe for the suggestions and said they would consider implementing them. Mayor Armacost also noted that one reason for some of the expense was the installation of telephone service in the new portion of the Municipal Building. Mr. Halbe also noted an expense of around $450 for the florist. The Mayor said it was the custom to send small plants to Avalon residents who are ill in their homes, as well as to shut-ins at Christmas. He said they contact local ministers and the hospitals for these names ad try not to miss anyone. Mr. Halbe was also asked by the Commissioners if he had any information about the wages a prospective, borough manager or
administrator might receive. Mr. Halbe said that the mean salary was $23,000 plus fringe benefits, although according to the size of the community and tax structure, it could go as high as $50,000. Those who have studied the situation were also of the opinion that the salaries of the future councilman would probably be about $3,000, as their jobs would be part-time. Red-Handed An IRS manual says that phenolphthalein sprinkled on your possessions at work will help you find culprits who “borrow” magazines and other items from your desk. When the “borrower” washes his hands, the soap turns the chemical on them red. Chipped Image The potato-chip industry's $200,000 drive to improve the snack's image suffered a setback from a St. Louis Post Dispatch editorial which said that the potato chip has almost no nutritional value. It added that polishing the potato chip's image “is like trying to portray Attila the Hun as a pioneer in urban renewal." True Confessions A Justice Department official dubs a new program to encourage companies to confess their part in alleged price-fixing con spiracies “Operation Rat.” Funny, most government programs amount to “Operation Rathole.”
