Sideline Shots By The Old Sport

After Friday night’s sensational win over the Middle Township Panthers, both Coach Bernie McCracken and J.V. Coach Greg Tracy agreed that Birdie McNeal was the only player to take that last second desperation shot. Birdie is the type of guy who wants the ball in a clutch or pressure-packed situation. Greg remembers that he won a game for his J.V. team two years ago in the same fashion. Birdie is the kind of player a coach loves to have on his team. *** Although Wildwood didn’t have as classy a team as Wildwood Catholic, they are big and with a starting team of 4 Juniors and a sophomore, things look bright for Bernie McCracken in the future. Incidentally the coach’s son, Bucky, played an outstanding floor game and Bernie calls him the “glue that holds the team together.” *** Coach Chick Ludman has done an outstanding job of coaching in bringing along this edition of the Panthers. Lacking any real big men, the team is handicapped in rebounding, but Herb Jaudon and Lee English are doing a good job. Without a scorer like last year’s Ricky Harmon, the team is better balanced with Rewi Thompson, Jaybird Watkins, Herb Jaudon and Doug Bryant capable of scoring high in any given game. And besides his valuable floor work on both offense and defense, Dave Spaulding can come up with points when needed. Coach Ludman has to keep a firm hand over these boys or they break out into a wild playground type of basketball, but they are well-disciplined and know what they have to do. *** Middle's Lady Panthers added another win to their record by defeating Wildwood’s Lady Warriors. Laurie Budd was high scorer. ***

Although Middle’s wrestling team lost to Millville, the J.V.’s lost a tough one too, when the Thunderbolts Heavyweight pinned his Panther opponent to win the match in the last event. *** The Court House Kiwanis Basketball Team is rounding into shape and will be taking on the Cape May team in two weeks in the series to determine the Kiwanis championship. The Kiwanians are also anxious to play the High School Faculty in a Charity Game. Last year the Teachers eked out a win in a double overtime game. *** In the Adult Volleyball League the Optimists have the most “esprit de corps” (no, Mabel, that is not French for body odor - it means team spirit). They root for their team and shout encouragement throughout the match. All that’s lacking is a corps of cheerleaders. *** Among the celebrities playing in the Adult Volleyball League are Bob Hentges, County Surrogate, playing on the Optimists team, Dr. Theodore Johnson, Supt. of Schools of Middle Township, for Kiwanis. Calvin Back, Chairman of the School Board of Middle Twp. for the Optimists, Ray Batz, Soccer Coach of Middle Twp. High School for the Optimists, Bob Penkethman,, Vice-Principal of Middle Twp. High School for Kiawanis, and genial Carl Baker, President of the Middle Twp. Recreation Dept, for the Optimists. The volleyball games are very capably refereed by Gregg Arnold, Recreation Director of Middle Township assisted by his two Rec. Dept, assistants. Games are played every Tuesday night at 7:00, 8:00 and 9:00 P.M. at the 4-H Club Activities Center on Dennisville Road. Thanks to the cooperation given the league by “Mel” Lockwood, County 4-H Agent.

C.M. JUNIOR BASKETBALL On Jah. 6th, the Celtics broke open a very tight game midway into the final period with a couple of steals and some pretty fast breaks by Pat Holden and Bill Mendo to whip the Warriors. Lou Washington canned 22 points, Bill Mendo 16, Pat Holden 9, Sean Magee 2 and Joe Glazer 2, to handle the scoring chores. Reggie Taylor was a terror on the boards while jamming in 14 points to help the Warriors control the first half. The Cavaliers parlayed a 20 point fourth quarter into a 60 to 47 blitz of the Sixers. Bill Lonergon’s red-hot shooting (24 points) and the consistant inside game of Phil Boyd (24 points) were too much for the Sixers down the stretch. Johnny ‘Chicken’ Richardson tallied a game high 27 points and Claude Wise accounted for 9 markers to keep the game competitive. Stig Blomkvest swished four points and handed out a few assists while Nicky Castellano and Evie Stewart combined for 13 points for the Cavaliers and Sixers, respectively. C.M. WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL League Standings (W-L): Water Flumes, 20-1; Kahn’s Ugly Mugshots, 15-9; Ocean Academy, 13-11; P&K Associates, 3-18.

Middle Twp. Basketball After playing the favored Sacred Heart of Vineland even in the regulation time, Middle Township's basketball team fell apart in overtime, with the Hearts scoring 20 points to the Panthers 4, and went down to defeat by 73-57. Herb Jaudon had 13 points and Jaybird Watkins had 10 while Rewi (the New Zealand Zoomer) Thompson led the team with 27 points, his high for the season. Middle Township is now 7-3 for for the season and goes up against red-hot Ocean city at home on Friday night. Also last Friday night, the Panthers suffered a heart-breaking loss to Wildwood at Middle's Gym. Getting off to a fast start, the Panthers led 18-5 at the end of the first period but Wildwood caught fire in the second quarter and it was 24-24 at the half. Middle led 39- 34 at the end of the 3rd period. Then the lead sea-sawed until Herb Jaudon sank two free throws to put the Panthers ahead by 54-53. When Jaudon missed another free throw, Wildwood called time out and set up a play. With 5 seconds showing on the clock the Warriors passed the ball in to Birdie McNeal who dribbled along the sideline and swished a two-pointer just before the buzzer to give Wildwood the win, 55-54. A capacity crowd saw the upset victory, and enjoyed the acrobatics of Middle's pyramid-building cheerleaders as well as the rhythm of Dick Ludwig's Panther Band. Coach Ludman said that his team "lost their concentration and made some mistakes, but they are only high school boys." He expects them to come back strong. The next home game is with Ocean City on Friday, Jan. 12th. Middle's Jayvees ran their unbeaten record to 6 games under the tutelage of Bill "Daddy" Lucas, by winning 56-49 And Middle's Freshman team coached by "Dennis the Menace" Anderson is still undefeated. Middle Twp. future in basketball looks good.
