THE HERALD THURSDAY JANUARY 11, 1979

SPORTS BASKETBALL OFFICIATING Middle Township’s basketball team suffered a heart-breaking loss to Sacred Heart of Vineland on Tuesday night. But the accounts in the press give no Inclination of what really happened. The story said that the Panthers lost in overtime when the Hearts outscored them 20-4. But that's not the real story. In regulation time, Middle was leading by 1 point with 3 seconds to play. Sacred Heart had the ball out of bounds at the end of the court. Now anyone with any knowledge of basketball, knows that there is not time to bring the ball down court for a legitimate shot at the basket. It would have to be a wild desperation shot from half-court. But the Hearts did not have to resort to this kind of shot. When the ball was passed in, the Hearts player pivoted around and bumped into Doug Bryant of the Panthers who was standing motionless. Yet he was called for blocking. The Hearts’ player was awarded a one and one foul try. He made the first,

tying up the game and missed the second, sending the game into overtime. Playing without Herb Jaudon who had fouled out on some other questionable fouls, the Panthers were unable to cope with the officials and Sacred Heart sank foul shot after foul shot to blow the game wide open. The final count on foul shooting was Middle 3-10 and Scred Heart 2?-32. Now this writer has observed basketball for over 50 years, coached and even officiated high school games and I know that some times an official’s vision can be blocked, but when a play happens right in the open, such as a player holding the rim with one hand and dunking with the other, and the official allows the basket and calls a foul on the Middle player, there is no excuse for him. Which brings me to the point that why is an official who lives in Vineland selected to referee a game in which a Vineland team is involved? This happens all the

time at Sacred Heart games and it is not the fault of the Sacred Heart Coach Jim Megan. The officials are assigned by a supervisor of the chapter. Coach Megan apologized to Coach Chick Ludman of Middle Township, He said he was embarrassed to win a game in such a manner. And Sacred Heart fans came up to Coach Ludman after the game and told him his team deserved to win. What can a coach tell his boys who have fought their hearts out to win a game only to have their deserved win taken away by poor officiating? He has no official protest; the calls are up to the judgement of the officials. Maybe this is a case where the videotape machine should be used to get the right decision.
