First Woman on Council

The largest crowd to attend a borough council meeting in many months saw Miss Dorothea A. Pfeiffer sworn into office as councilman in Stone Harbor last week. She became the first woman to join the governing body since the town was incorporated in 1914. Following the swearing-in ceremony conducted by attorney William Balliette, the council members voted to re-elect Councilman Arcen W. Hand as president of council. Mayor James G. Wood announced committee apo-ntments for 1979. Each committee has three members and the chairmen are: Public Safety, Police Dept.,

Robert J. Fitzpatrick; Public Safety, Fire Dept., Eric J. Arenberg; Beachfront, Arden W. Hand; Waterfront Improvements, Eric J. Arenberg; Recreation and Publicity, Dorothea A. Pfeiffer; Streets and. Buildings, Louis C. Clelland; Health & Welfare, Eric J. Arenberg and Water & Sewers, Harry E. Strohmetz. The mayor also announced all Caucus and Regular Council meetings during the year will start at 7:00 P.M. The dates of these monthly meetings will be posted on the borough’s bulletin board and will be advertised in a local newspaper.

Women: Back to School

“Women: Back to School” will be the subject Thursday, Jan. 18th of the next in a series of free, mid-day programs presented in Cape May County by Atlantic Community College. The hour-long program will begin at noon in the Rio Grande Social Services Complex conference room. Audience members are invited bring their lunches. Mrs. Melora Davis, Cape May County reference librarian, will

discuss the advantages and opportunities available to women who return to school. Mrs. Davis is well-versed in the topic. After raising her family, Mrs. Davis enrolled in the University of Delaware where she was awarded a B.A. in 1971. She received a M.L.S. from the University of Maryland in 1974.
