SOUNDS By Charles P. Lamey - Having found most of their previous releases to be overblown and pretentious, "Love Beach’’ (Atlantic) by Emerson, Lake and Palmer comes as a pleasant shock. The material, while still relying on classical themes, now has more of a pop texture, with an emphasis on vocals and melodies. Maybe their future still holds a few surprises after all, as “Love Beach” is a strong, consistent outing. In another newspaper, I made the mistake of panning Moon Martin’s “Shots From A Cold Nightmare” (Capitol). True, his singing isn’t very distinctive, but, after several playings, his warm, relaxed approach to rock and roll more than made up for a limited vocal range. His songs are all good and the backing from Gary Valentine, Phil Seour, and Willie Alexander is tough and overwhelming. Others are recording his songs, but Moon Martin’s own versions merit listening to. A bit more aggressive is the debut of Roger C. Reale. His “Radio Active” (Big Sound) puts some life into a dull heavy metal scene, by keeping the songs short and to the point. “Stop And Go” and "Reach For The Sky” are the highlights of the originals, but The Troggs’ “I Can’t Control Myself’ stands out the most. Next time, though, the guitars should be mixed more upfront, as too often they’re buried beneath the rhythm section. Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi’s Blues Brothers routine on Saturday Night Live was certainly entertaining the first time around; they were competent in playing the blues and easily worth a few chuckles.

But, for some highly questionable reason, they took themselves seriously, and we’re left with a boring, self-indulgent album (Atlantic). Go to the South Side of Chicago and see the starving, talented bluesmen who feel fortunate when they’re allowed in a recording studio, instead of listening to this tripe. Support the real thing. The Centaurus’ first album is a promising start for another heavy metal contender. Excellent guitar work and some fine vocals, but the material is uneven and often insipid. The band is obviously talented and with better songs, they’ll be a tough act to follow. If stores can’t stock their album, try writing to Azra Records, Box 411, Maywood, Ca. 90270. AC/DC from Australia are starting to make a name for themselves , in this country, despite the fact their studio albums haven’t been very impressive. This live album, “If You Want Blood” (Atlantic), starts to explain their appeal as the music is raw and exciting. The group still shows a penchant for overdoing things, bat the guitar sound of AC/DC is one of the best around. Without a doubt, Heart makes great singles, and Ann Wilson is one of the finest female vocalists today. But, their new album, “Dog and Butterfly” (Portrait) is, again, a let down. Unfortunately, they tend to down-play their natural pop sound for too many guitar breaks and directionless material. Given a good song, Heart rocks with the best of them, but one would be much better off picking up their singles and avoiding their albums.

BEGINS SECOND TERM - Middle Township Clerk George Simpkins, Ieft, administers the oath of office to Committeeman Joseph V. Walsh, right. Walsh, a Democrat, was sworn in during ceremonies at the Township’s re-organization meeting last Thursday. Walsh thanked the voters for returning him to office and looks forward to tenting the people of the Township for another three years. Walsh will once again head up the Police Department, Dog Control, and Courts.
