Sideline Shots By The Old Sport

A large contingent of Middle Township fans treked up to Pleasantville to see the Panthers lose to the Greyhounds 68-41. Too bad they had to see them at their worst after a strong start in the first period. Instead of sticking to the well-disciplined, ball control type of game that Coach Ludman teaches them, they revert to the hot-dogging, playground style of the Globetrotters and the game gets out of control. It’s true that the Greyhounds have a tremendous team, with Tony Davenport scoring and his big teammates rebounding and getting the ball to him. But Middle is capable of making a better game of it than they showed on Tuesday. Their coach blames their “lack of concentration, they can’t keep it up more than 8 minutes.” They were certainly well-prepared for the game and primed for an upset. Too bad it was not to be. ***

Observed at the game were Jack and Jane Hand with their lovely daughter and her husband, Ed Weimer. Red-hot basketball fan of the School Board, Mrs. Charlotte Harmon, mother of another basketball player, Mark of the J.V.’s, Aileen Marriner and her trio of athletic sons, Chuck, Mike, and Teddy. Other parents were there but the only thing they had to cheer about were the acrobatic antics of Middle’s Cheerleaders, who topped their precision foot-stomping rivals.

***

Although the officiating in the varsity game was fine, the efforts of the whistle-tooters in the J.V. game left much to be desired. One official was more interested in catching “Big Daddy” Lucas out on the floor than in calling a foul on the players. It made his night when he finally called a technical on the genial J.V. coach.

Techniques of Athletic Training

A new non-credit course on “Techniques of Athletic Training,” will be offered this spring by Atlantic Community College. The course will examine prevention and rehabilitation of sports injuries. Persons will also learn how to set up and maintain a functional training room. The 15 week long course will meet Monday, beginning Jan. 22, from 7 to 10 PM in Jonathan Pitney Hall on ACC’s Mays Landing campus. Another section will meet thursdays, beginning Jan. 25 from 7 to 10 PM on the Mays Landing campus. The course is open to junior and senior high school coaches, physical education instructors, community athletic coaches and persons interested in sports medicine. Registrations will be accepted at the Tint class meeting. Tuition for the course is $60. Master Charge and Vlas are accepted. The course is being conducted by Tona Rubba, A.T.C., Acc’s head athletic trainer. Rubba

served as assistant athletic trainer with the New Orleans Saints, of the National Football League. “Coaching is a difficult job in itself, without the added burden of preventing, maintaining and rehabilitating injured athletes - no matter what the age level,” he said. “The first 24 to 48 hours after an injury are vital to the athlete’s recovery. If proper medical attention is available, we can minimize the recovery time and prevent further complications.” Advance registration and complete information a ut the course can be obtained by calling ACC’s Athletic Office. 625-1111 or 646-4950, Ext. 237

Gem Girls Win .. Avalon girls varsity stumbled by St. Raymond’s 7-5 in a defensive wonder. Both teams showed multiple defensives and presses which contained each team’s offense. St. Raymond’s took a 1-0 lead at halftime, but Avalon came out firing in the second half outscoring the visitors 7-3 to preserve the win. Leading scorer for the Gems was Jackie Pedroni with 4 points; while Wendy Griffin led the defense with several outstanding plays and ruled the rebounds. In the first game, the Girls J.V. team dropped an 84 contest to St. Raymond’s J.V. Again poor shooting was Avalon’s downfall with Lynn Spinaugle the only Gem to

score.

Girls J.V. and Varsity’s next games will be Fri., Jan. 19th, home at 6:00 P.M. and Jan. 22nd, Home at 6:00 P.M. All games are played at the Avalon Community Hall. In the J.V. game, Avalon, the much smaller team got off to a cold start by only scoring 9 points in the first half to St. Augustine’s 18. Middle Twp. Loses to Pleasantville

The Middle Township Panthers journeyed up to Pleasantville on Tuesday night bent on surprising the undefeated Greyhounds. And surprise them they did - for 8 minutes. They got off to a great start, controlled the ball, took good shots and led until the final seconds of the quarter when Tony Davenport sunk a jumper to give Pleasantville a 10-9 lead. But in the second period the bottom fell out for Middle, they scored only 2 points in the whole quarter and trailed 28-11 at the half. The final score was

68-41.

From then on it was a game of the Greyhounds toying with Middle’s bumpkins. They could do nothing right and after Herb Jaudon fouled out with 6 minutes to go, it looked like a playground game, with the only interest being how many points would Tony Davenport would score. He wound up with 30 and looks like the successor to Ricky Harmon, as South Jersey’s outstanding basketball player.

For Middle’s Panthers, Jaybird Watkins was high scorer with 12 points, Jaudon and Thompson each scored 9 and Lee English had 6 with

Matthews 5.

Matthew’s showed an unexpected knack of foul shooting after he replaced Herb Jaudon, sinking 5 of 8 attempts. In the. J.V. game, Middle got back on the winning track by a score of 61-57. Eric Williams

shot 3 of 4 pressure-packed foul shots in the final seconds. Hand was high man with 15 points, with Platt getting 12 and Rick

Olson 11.

The freshman team of Dennis the Menace Anderson played their game in the boondocks of the old Middle School and went down to defeat for the first time by a score of 96-86. The Lady Panthers started a new winning streak by taming the Lady Greyhounds 4S-24 at Middle Township’s Gym. Laurie Budd hit for 26 points and Sue McKinley had 10.
