on his own parking area on 20th Street, putting the furniture store and carpet store inside the mail. He could then use the currently unused municipal parking lot on 20th Street for
parking - without any further
expense or inconvenience to others.
Additional stores added to the town by the walking mall would merely serve to decrease the income of existing businesses in the community. All of us face the fact that while the town increases greatly in population each summer it can only support a definite number of businesses successful each, year. Three store complexes of similar principle presently exist in the
community, the majority are mostly seasonal businesses with some empty stores. Many of the people working so hard for these so-called “improvements," moved to this town because of what it is. Now they want to drastically change it - which logically makes no sense. Let’s not destroy Avalon’s reputation of a quaint little community by the sea and ruin its attractiveness to people from bustling cities. Like it or not, this town’s single attraction is the vast body of water with its beautiful beach lying to the east of this community. Please do not consider adopting this plan as it presently
stands, major revisions must be made in all fairness to the taxpayers, presently established business people, and the present and future vacationers. Respectfully, George W. Phillips Mayor and Commissioners Borough of Avalon SAYS HIS COMPANY WAS LOWEST BIDDER Dear Editor: On November 11, 1978, our company submitted a bid for the solid waste collection services for the City of Sea Isle City. Our company was not only the lowest responsible bidder, but moreover, our company’s bid
represented a savings to the City of Sea Isle City of approximately $164,963.00 per year. Our company’s bid was $87,980.00 per year. The City rejected our bid but chose in its place to spend $252,943.00 to obtain the very same services our company would have performed for $87,980.00 per year. The City entered into a disposal contract with a sanitary landfill at a cost of $52,943.00 per year (our bid included the cost of disposal). Additionally, the City’s cost for solid waste collection (labor) in 1978 was $140,000.00 (with overtime) and also, City proposes to buy two solid waste collection trucks at a total cost of $60,000.00. It should be also pointed out, that the City of Sea Isle City has ascertained from other communities that our company services in South Jersey to these other communities has been very satisfactory. The taxpayers of the City of Sea Isle City can only wonder about the fiscal responsibility of such actions. In a time . of national, state, county and municipal fiscal restraint, the City of Sea Isle City is literally throwing away substantial tax dollars. The tax payers of the City of Sea Isle City should take a good hard look at the actions of the governing body of Sea Isle City in this matter. SECT VS. CULT To the Editor: Recently I reviewed notes taken in Comparative Religions and Philosophy. Comparative Religions was taken at the University of Vermont. Philosophy was taken at Glassboro College. There is a distinct difference between a cult and sect. In this age of uncertainty and Hedonism many people are caught up in cults without realizing they are false. 1. CULT: A formal religious veneration. Veneration means respect or awe inspired by the dignity, wisdom, dedication or talent of a person. It is a system, of religious beliefs and ritual. It is a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious (false). It is also a great devotion to a person, idea, or thing. It is usually a small Circle of persons united by devation or allegiance to an artistic or intellectual movement or figure. 2. SECT: A sect is a way of life, class of persons. It is a dissenting or schismatic religious denomination. It is a group adhering to a distinctive doctrone or to a leader. Sect comes from the Latin word Segii which means to follow. The consequences of cults results in chaos, death, and destruction of property. A classic example of a cult is the terrible destruction in Guyana with Jim Jones as leader. Marjorie Galamore Sea Isle City LETTER RECEIVED BY LOCAL RESIDENT IN RESPONSE TO "WORKFARE" QUERY Mr. Howard L. Hesslcr 266 58th Street Avalon, New Jersey 08202 Dear Mr. Hesslcr: Governor Byme has asked me to respond to your recent comments concerning the legal action our Division of Public Welfare brought against the City of Borden town over the administration of the General Assistance (GA) Program. State law requires each municipality to provide assistance to needy individuals. This law also requires each municipality to have both a local assistance board and a welfare director. It was our position that Bordentown was in violation of law since it had neither a local assistance board nor a welfare director. Since it is my duty to uphold the law, 1 supported the Division in its attempt to seek a legal remedy to this situation. We have never been and arc not now opposed to a work requirement for persons who are applying for assistance and able to work. The State program requires able bodied recipients to be referred to the State Employment Service for jobs. Under the State law, enacted one year ago, applicants work in job or training programs under the Department of Labor and are reimbursed from welfare funds at minimum wage to a maximum of $119 a month.
