Sideline Shots By The Old Sport
The Old Sport learned something about a new sport last week at the Middle Twp . Absegami Wrestling Match. A lot of work is necessary to get the gym ready for wrestling. Three large mats are laid on the Basketball floor. They are swept clean and then mopped so they are athletically clean as a whistle. Then there is the psychological preparation by Steve Bianco, wrestling coach of M.T.H.S. Accompanied by peppy music on the stereo the team bounds out on the floor and goes through a warmup drill like a tribe of Apache Indians. Finished, they take their places in a row of chairs facing the mat. There are 12 weight classes ranging from 101 to unlimited class. It includes 101, 108, 115, 122, 129, 135, 141, 148, 158, 170, 188 and unlimited. If a wrestler fails to come in under his weight class, he must forfeit the bout. So one sees a wrestler running around the gym innumerablytimes to shed a little weight; maybe only ounces. The Old Sport is indebted to new football coach "Phil the Flex" Exley for a crash course in the point scoring system of wrestling. Points are awarded by the referee for take downs, escapes, pins, etc. which determine the winner. The boys have to train very hard to keep in shape for Olympic-style competition, not the show business kind of exhibitionism seen on T.V. Phil Exley is enjoying his new found notoriety - after having his picture in the Herald two weeks ago, he was disappointed when the Bulletin Gazette-Leader and other local sheets merely ran a news story without his youthful physiognomy. "The Flex" certainly has an overpowering personality and he is the type who will certainly get ahead in hos chosen profession. And girls, he's still a Bachelor! Doug Bryant, Middle's playmaking guard has a problem - to cornrow or not to cornrow. All season wearing his hair tied down in tight curls, he had a distinctive appearance on the court. Then he appeared against PLEASANTVILLE in a free-flowing bouffant Afro. And he had a miserable night on the court. Should he go back to the corn-row? And will that solve his basketball problems? Last seen at the high school it was free in the wind.
Gems Boys Varsity Split
Avalon Boys Varsity 'split last
week and evened their record at 2 wins and 2 losses. The boys have been very inconsistent this season showing times of brilliance and periods of floundering," commented Coach Sykes.
In Avalon's game against Lady of the Angels the Gems showed diverse defenses and a potent offense scoring 43 points while giving up 34. Mixing man to man defenses with varied zones and
a balanced scoring attack the Gems coasted to a comfortable win. Kevin MacFarlane was high
scorer with 11 points while Mike McCurdy and Peter Soens added
10 points apiece.
Stone Harbor Varsity Boys treated Avalon a little different by blowing them off the court,
61-36. Stone Harbor took a
37-12 halftime lead and never let up. Avalon came back in the second half and played S.H. even, but were never able to make up the 25 point deficiency of the first half.
High scorers for the Gems were Kevin Mac Farlane (12), Peter Soens (11), and Andre Jacquemetton (10). Stone Harbor's big guns were Dave Cox (16), Stanford (13), and Hersh (10).
Adult Basketball Team Seeks Away-from-Home Games
An Adult Basketball Team has been formed in the area, sponsored by Billy Mulligan’s Inn in the Villas and composed of Middle Township, Lower Cape May and Wildwood coaches and former high school players. These men have a sincere interest in basketball and
have been practicing Monday nights at the Lower Township Consolidated. Since their gym is not large enough for games to be
held there, it will be necessary to
play their games on the road. Games are wanted with A.C., Vineland, Millville and Bridgeton teams. Any teams interested in a game should get in touch with Bill Sherman, 465-4400 for information. It is hoped that a game with the Philadelphia Eagles basketball team can be arranged to benefit some local charity like the Heart Fund, United Way, or Cancer Society.

Gem Girls Dump St. Raymond’s
Avalon Varsity Girl Gems finally broke double figures by outscoring St. Raymond's 27-12. The win is Avalon's second with
1 defeat.
During the last two games Avalon was only able to-mount 16 points while giving up 15. “The defense has been super!’’ remarked Coach Sykes, “but our Offense hasn’t been able to get on track. Maybe the 27 points is an indication that the girls have finally arrived.” Betsy King, Avalon’s point guard, did an excellent job in running the offense and hitting the open girl. Wendy Griffin and Jackie Pedroni continued their dominence on the backboards. The hot hand for Avalon was Jennifer Snyder scoring 14 points while King and Pedroni
scored 7 and 6 respectively. Snyder, the only underclass girl (6th grade) on the starting varsity team is improving daily and proving to be an asset both defensively and offensively. The Avalon Girl Gems J.V. made it two in a row by crushing St. Raymond’s 20-2 and St
Augustine 30-3.
Defense shined while the J.V.'s offense flourished. Avalon scored 50 points in two games while giving up only 5 points. High scorers for Avalon in the two games were Sue Ripp (14), Dawn Reynolds (10), and Ronnie Orlando (7). “Avalon’s girls basketball future, looks bright,” commented Sykes. Next home game for the girls J.V. and Varsity Jan. 25th at 4 P.M. against Sea Isle.
