. County Herald Changes Hands

The Cape May County Herald, Cape Miry County’s oldest free distribution community newspaper, dr ownership last week; and> newspaperman Darrell Kopp will serve as the County Herald’s new editor and publisher. Kopp takes over the newspaper’s reins from Jane Ann Cunnftigham, who was associated with the Herald from * its early years. Mrs! Cunningham had been editor and publisher l * during most of the middle and 4ate 1970’s. She and -her husband, Dr. John Cunningham, an Avalon physician, had been the prindpal owners of the Herald prior to its recent sale. Mrs. Cunningham will continue to contribute occasional editorial items to the newspaper. The County Herald was sold to The Sfeawave Corporation, a local newspaper concern owned by ’Arthur and Patrida hall of Wildwood Crest. The Cape May County Herald is a -weekly community newspaper, distributed free throughout Cape May Comity. If ^ has been published in Avalon since it was established in 1967. the new publisher and editor, Darrell Kopp, said this week.that the County Herald’s Historic Trip to Holland Capt. Cornelius Jacobsen Mey sailed from the European town of Hoorn in 1620 aboard the “Glad Tidings” to explore the Atlantic Coast of North

America.

Sailing south along the sho re and then up the Delaware Bay, he named the peninsula "Cape Mey” after himself. ' On April ' 1, present-day residents of Cape May County, including the mayor of Cape May City, will visit Hoorn at the invitation of its burgomeister, F.

Sponsored by the Cape May County Historical Society, the historic Holland tout will start from the old Acme Market here in Cape May Court House on April 1st and return on April 9th. * There will be tours of Amsterdam, the 65 aert gardens at Lisse, the world’s largest hothouse at Aalsmere, The Hague, Delft, the seaside resort of Scheveningen, Vdendam, the Isle of Mafeen, the fishing village of Monnikendam and Hoorn. Kopp, a 13-year resident of Cape May County, began his work in county newspapers in 1973 as a reporter with theXape May Star and Waye. Ip 1^75 he was named editor of the Seven Mile Beach Reporter and the

Cape May County Times, and later served as editor and general manager of the Cape May County Gazette. For the put two years he has been advertising manager of a summer tourist weekly. Kopp holds a B.A. in history/^ In 1977 he was awarded-the M.A. in political science,' from the College of Wflliam and Mary.

Gypsy Moth Spray Program

A public meeting to discuss thfc 1979 Gypsy Moth Spray Program for Cape May County will be held at the Cape May County Extension Service Education 'CepieFrL Route 657, Cape May' Court House, on Friday, Fib. 23rd at 7:30 P.M. John Kegg, New Jersey State Entomologist, will.be on hand to discuss the 1979 Spray Program

for the County.

Maps of proposed spray areas will be presented to, township representatives who will also be bn hand to discuss the? 1979 program. The Gypsy Moth has been a v very serious insect pest on the mainland of Cape May County. The public is encouraged to attend this session if they have any questions at all about the control program.
