more dynamic than their previous studio recordings, and prove Todd Rundgrcn is capable of taking his music on the road. Todd Rundgren is a well-balanced rock and roll performer, who makes great records and can pull it off in concert, with class. Most of all, Rundgren is entertaining, and "Back To The Bars” is an exquisite dbcument of his music. Chicago' is a hot-bed of musical activity these days with bands like Cheap Tnck, Pezband, Shoes, The Names, and Wazmo Nariz releasing infectious, modem day pop tunes. A new band. Tantrum (Ovation) can be added to this growing list of performers.' Tantnm are a slick, professional outfit, fronted by three, very capable female vocalists. At their worst, they sound like a slightly above average bar-band, but When they’re hot, Tantrum are a rocking outfit with charming, enticing vocals. Hopefully, we’ll soon be able to sec Tantrum in concert, as this is a group which merits watching.

Gerry Rafferty’s sudden rise into the charts last summer has prompted him to produce his brother Jim's debut for London Records. Like his brother, Jim Rafferty concentrates on composing melodic, soft-rock tunes, and his pleasing voice is suited for this style of music. Nazareth is a hard-working band from Scotland, yet their new album, "No Mean City” (A&M) is a dry, tepid collection of well-worn ideas. Nazareth has always been an enthralling group in concert, but, on ymyl, they sorely lack direction.’ - ^© Mean City” doesn’t bode well for their future. Like Nazafeth, England’s U.F.O. have been selling hundreds of thousands of records by constant touring, despite the fact their studio endeavors always pale to their concerts. U.F.O. have combated the problem by issuing their new live double album. "Strangers In The Night.” (Chrysalis). The group is raw and awesome on tunes such as "Doctor Doctor” and "Rock Bottom.” U.F.O. are one of the few bands who are keeping heavy metal music from completely dying out and “Strangers In The Night” is a good example of why The ReziDos’ "Can’t Stand The Rezillos” (Sire) is j fine debut album, which should please fans of straight-forward rock and roll. The songs are short and snappy, with an unrelentless rhythm section and powerful .vocals by Fay Fife’ and Eugene Reynolds. They even do a credible version of The Dave Gark Five smash “Glad All Over.” This is a group of the future. Capitol Records has recently initiated a ‘‘Best Of series and their first releases carefully examine the Capitol years of The Band, Wings, Renaissance, Be-Bop Deluxe, and The Steve Miller Band. Dedicated fani of these artists already have the music represented - but for those who want to catch up on some fine music, this is a good
way.
