Safari to the Big Apple
Hv Bill Sherman
Six residents of Cape May’ County trekked to New York City on Sunday. February 18. to take part in the Arthritis Foundation Telethon held from 10 am. Saturday. February 10 thru 6
p.m. on Supday the 11th.
Leaving Rio Grande was Flora Carlberg and her daughter Geraldine who collected the grand sum of $175. in the recent • dance-a-thon held by the Dancers Two School of the Dance under the leadership of Nancy Gibson and Suzy Bums. The event was held at the Post Home of the Thurston Elmer Wood Post No. 198 of the American Legion. The Dance-a-thon raised money for
the Arthritis Foundation.
From Court House came Post Commander Clara Foster and Post Adjutant Bill Sherman with his wife Dorothy. They met at the home of Marshal "Ted" Behr. Department Vice Commander of the American Legion, who drove the safari wagon. Going by way of the Garden State Parkway and the Jersey Turnpike, they crossed the Hudson by way of the Lincoln Tunnel and. made their way to the Ed SuUjvan Theatre on Broadway where the telethon
was being held/
Reporting to Harry Carlson, liaison man between the Legion and the Arthritis Foundation, they were warmly received and given proper badges. Mrs. Carlberg and Mrs. Sherman were given seats in the audience while Ted Behr manned one of the telephones and took pledges. Ms. Foster. Mr. Sherman and Ms. Carlberg waited in the wings for their chance to present the check for $2500. The amount raised by Cape May County Dancers to the Arthritis Foundation. Unof-
ficially it was the largest donation from any single Legion PoSt in the state of New Jersey: and all this money had been pledged and collected by the students of Miss Nancy and Miss Suzy in a rural community of only 14.000 people. Quite a showing for
Cape May County.
The Masters of Ceremonies were Tom Kennedy of "Name That Tune". Kevin Dobson of "Koja^'" and Melba Moore, lovely singer of Broadway shows. After some jokes by Henny 'Take my wife, please) Youngman the Cape May CoUntv contingent made its debut on TV. Sherman explained where they came from and introduced Geraldine Carlberg and Commander Foster who were to present the check. But to his chagrin another face appeared whom he did not recognize. This was Dept. Commander Anthony Lori who was so proud of this group that he came on with them. Then the bright lights of the TV
studio were turned off and the big moment was over. Rill Sherman was greatly. impressed tty the personality of Kevin Dobson, and learned that he has completed a film for TV called •Transplant", the true story of a man with a heart transplant, to be shown in the spring. Ms. # Foster favored Tom Kennedy and * Geraldine was just thrilled by it all. Autographs of Kevin. Tom and Andrea McArdle of the Broadway show "Annie" were
obtained.
Refreshments were enjoyed and they sat down to watch the show until at 5:00 p.m. the desired quota of $500,000. was oblaihed and the time had come to return to Cape May County. But first, there was * stop at Bill Mulligan's restaurant where they were befriended by a couple of Irish waiters who were only too hospitable. After a few pictures were taken as reminders of their big day in the "Big Apple", the safari returned home.

Hallahan Alumnae’s Southeastern Jersey Chapter will hold a business meeting in Victorian Towers. Thursday. March 1. at 1:00 p.m. This will be an organizational meeting - unlike the December 7 meeting, which because of the nearness of Christmas was a gala Holiday reunion, although many ideas and suggestions were briefly discussed, hopefully to be im-
plemented in 1979.
While the December meeting had a gratifying attendance of 56 Southeast Jersey , members, coordination of the original list of Jersey shore residents with those who actually attended the first two meetings produced some 120 potential members of the SEJ Chapter, all of whom we hope to
reach and welcome.
Hallahan. first Catholic Girls' High School (as such) in America, brought together under one roof the several High School Centers which had operated in Philadelphia parochial schools since 1901. Its cornerstone, laid in 1911. had been blessed and presented by the then reigning Pope Pius X (1903-1914) who was canonized in 1954. It has given the nation many noteworthy citizens ; and even in this young SEJ
Chapter we have Sister Rose Regina (Morris) SSJ. of Blessed Sacrament. Margate, who was honored as Women of Valor, in 1977, by the Sisterhood of Temple Emeth Shalom and the Onion of American Hebrew Congregations "For bringing the beauty of life to the blind and aged, regardless of race, religion or creed, through her qfhicational, cultural and humanitarian endeavors, and in honor of many years of faithful and dedicated membership service." Clown And Magic Show There will be a gala Clown and Magic Show featuring the Hoffnagle Clowns on Sat.. Feb. 24. 1979 at Middle Township High School. There will be four Performances — 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Middle Townsip Band Boosters. Tickets are $1.00 and are available at the high school, from band members or at the door. Fun for the whole family, from 3 to 103.
