Coast Guard Fights Ice
Coast Guard Cutter Cantenary, from Gloucester City, N.J., has been underway since Feb. 10, breaking ice in the Delaware River to keep the flow of vessel traffic moving. "Tankers, freighters, and the Cape May, N.J. to Lewis, Del. Ferry would not be abie to complete their deliveries if it weren’t for the Cantenary breaking a path in the three to five foot thick ice ”, said Captain Norris of the Ferry Boat
New Jersey.
Withstanding 4S. >!PH gale winds and the accumulation of one ton of ice on the\ superstructure, the Coast Guart^ Cutter diligently continued Itsf help vessels in the ice laden river. “At one time it took over four hours to break a path 2.2 miles long", said the Captain, Chief Boatswain’s Mate David G. Hawthorne. "We
freed one pilot boat that was completely iced in at Harbor Refuge", he added. Along with keeping the channel and some Inlets open, the Catenary also has been recovering bouys and towing weather stricken
vessels to safety.
"They deserve alot of credit", said Capt. Morris, about the 65 foot Coast Guard Harbor Tug and the six man crew. The Cantenafy is the number one vessel, to be called'upon for work in these icy conditions, according to
Hawthorne. The sub-zero ternmeans that the paths in thence J? IE I, CE 9? Vf ' REDt 0ASTGlJ ^ , ' D ^’** r ^^ , ATENARY is hard at work clearing the entrance of the Cape new/To be recarved periodical^ M#y ( ,or lhe ^ ( Guard photo by Kevin Nedd > |
to remain open. That leaves little, if any, time for the crew to rest and sleep. "With the noise of the ice scraping against the hull, there’s no way you can sleep
when breaking ice", stated Capt. Hawthorne. "We do the best we can do, for anybody we can do it
for", he concluded.
Cape May Court House railroad station was deserted after this week’s storm.
