An all-day a r son conference for both foremen and policemen is scheduled for this Saturday, March 3, 1979 at the Avalon Community Center, according to County Prosecutor, Donald R. Charles. Jr. The conference is sponsored by the Cape May County Fire and Police Chiefs Associations and the County Prosecutor’s Office. The purpose of the conference is to bring both firemen and policemen together for an intensive training session in investigative techniques in arson investigations, the roles and responsibilities of the agencies involved tn arson investigation and on the legal problems in the investigation and prosecution of arsons. Charles stated that the County Fire and Police Chiefs Associations have been working together over the past several months to develop better coordination between their agencies as well as improved means of investigating arsons. “There is a vast amount of experience and training among both firemen and policemen in the area of arson investigations. The arson conference represents an important first step in coordinating and improving the overall effort of investigating suspected arsons,”
he said.
The Prosecutor said that the overall law enforcement effort in investigating and prosecuting arsons can and should be improved. He praised the Fire Chiefs Association for their persistence in making the nred for this effort apparent to everyone. He also credited the police and fire chiefs for their efforts in working together to achieve this goal. Avalon Police Request Aid From Residents Director of Public Safety, Owen P. Quinn and Police Chief Joseph E. Foley request the help and cooperation of all Avalon residents in reporting to the police department any suspicious vehicles or persons within their neighborhood. Within the last few weeks, there have been a series of breaking and entering. Both Commissioner Quinn and Chief Foley feel that some of these could have been curtailed if the local citizens would show enough interest to telephone the department to report any suspicious activity. The patrolmen do an excellent job but they can not be everywhere. The identity of persons getting involved will not be publicized, but you are urged to all get involved and help your local police department in apprehending these criminals, “we arc here to help you but you have to help us to do that job” stated Chief Foley.
