This is that auspicious time of the year when we once again await — some of us with breathless anticipation — the annual announcement of the number of new milliormaires that abound within our nation's borders. Each year, as everyone must surely know, this pronouncement almost always catches everyone by surprise. The surprise has to do with the number: there are always more _ than anyone is prepared to ex-

pect. k

But surprise is not the reaction of us here at INFLATION INVESTING headquarters. We’ve known a few millionnaires in our day. More importantly, we’ve watched more than a few grow into millionnaires. And they’ve accomplished this economic miracle on their own — often despite humble origins, without benefit of silver spoon, and

is significant to note that many follow a common plan. It is a course open to all. High on the fortune builder’s priority list is the careful selection and long-term accumulation of common stocks that represent companies whose commitment to growth and success is directly comparable to their own. They buy companies that, like their own careers, consistently achieve above average growth and success in almost all that they undertake. Easier said than done, observes the skeptic. Perhaps .but there are many such companies and they have much in common. Their* major characteristics are well worth noting. They can benefit any investor. First, growth companies labor long and hard to make sure their common stock is valuable so that investors are richly rewarded for the risk they assume when they

buy it

To foster such rewards many growth companies finance growth out of retained earnings, rather than borrowed capital. Borrowed money can be expensive. It also has a senior claim on corporate earnings - and that.

Can we name names of some*of these corporate sky rockets? Can we offer a specific recommendation or two? Sure we could But we’re not going to. Finding them yourself is not all that difficult. And it's good training to do your own research. It might, in fact, start you on an investment course that one day will make you a member of a new crop of millionaires. And when that happens we’ll toast you with the same special tribute we offer this year’s crop - along with a reverent bow to our free enterprise system which makes all the opportunities possible in the first place.

We’re not familiar with all the roads to wealth. The wheel of fortune probably confers great sums of money on a fortunate few for no more plausible reason than they stood in the right place at the proper moment. Some, of course, are recipients of estate largesse that gives them instant millionnaire status. Others may simply bump into rainbows and

fall into pots of gold. Lottery ticket sales and gambling casino

patronage is based on such pie- plus for, as stated, revenues are in-the-*ky possibilities. plowed back to expensively

stock’s value. The total capitalization of superior growth companies is often common stock alone without a broad buck in the

lot.

Next, growth companies seek high, but achievable, growth rates in both sales and earnings. Twenty percent per year is a common target. It is sometimes exceeded. Dividends paid by these growth favorites are usually small in relation to both investment and earnings. But this counts as a

But the highways to great fortunes we have in mind are not tied to luck, accident or coincidence. They are based on more serious stuff-such as ambition, hard work, dedication to a plan, commitment to a goal. Failure is not in the make-up of such purposeful souls. If one career falters they quickly embrace another and rhove ahead in comparable successful

strides.

Needless to aay, a lot of these burgeoning fortune builders are, or some become, investors. And success usually crowns their efforts in this endeavor as well. Obviously, their investment approaches frequently vary but it

finance future growth. Besides, dividends, though small at the outset, are raised so frequently they ultimately provide a handsome return on the original

investment.

But the real clincher to the eye of the successful career-man-turned-investor is the determination by the company to be the dominant factor in its respective industry. Not even second place is good enough. This leadership status enables the’ company to determine its own destiny irrespective of outside forces. (Our new millionaires, not so incidentally, are not unfamiliar with’ this destiny charting process.)
