THE BOOK CORNER By Leslie Steysoir

‘CHISAPf AKK" ly ■Inmag A. Mltchnar What can you aay about a now book by Michener? CHESAPEAKE continues Michener's practise of digging into the past of some area, and giving the reader an in-depth slice of history. CHESAPEAKE is set on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and covers the period from the first settlements until the present. The story Is tcld by following the hist/ ry of a number of families of the area. It begins with the Indian tribes who first owned the land, and continues with each succeeding immigration. The wealthy, aristocratic Catholic plantation owners, the Steeds, prospered through the years as they planted tobacco and went into shipping and the slave trade. The Quaker Paxmores began by

building small boats and finally I became the most successful * shipbuilders along the Chesapeake. The Pax more women relentlessly waged war against slavery, and all other injustices. The Turlocks were a shiftless, interbred group who spent their lives in the marshes, but their family became intertwined throughout the years with the Steeds and the Paxmores. Unlike THE SOURCE. HAWAII, and CENTENNIAL, this novel devotes little space to geological data, but it does give interesting dissertations on the habits of the shore birds. This is not a book you can pick up and put down easily. Save it until you have the time to read it through. This seems to be true of moat Michener books. They cover so much territory, unless you stick with them, they are easy to lose interest in. But if you persevere, it is worth it.
