THE GREAT SOUND FOOD COOP’S recent fund-raising auction was a modest success, especially considering the icy highways would-be bidders had to brave to attend the affair. Here Cyril Caster is demonstrating an auto harp that auctioneer Ruth Fisher was trying to move to the receptive audience..

By Cheryl Crews Snow! White Drama: piercing transparency, glaring reflection. Furious movement, the wind visible, gushing parallel to the Avenue. Then still. The panorama is revealed: a whole new scene! There is a vague familiarity with the underlying structure, but such a fantastic overlay holding the moment! We stand transfixed, but not for long. We must move out beyond that moment. The artist develops the ability to sustain a moment. She must let herself be a witness to the event of seeing. While others are disgruntled by the inconvenience, the artist is eagerly looking. At first, all that registers is vast white. As the sky clears, the forms appear, catching the light, and blocking it. Details are subdued by grand gestures. Swirling eddies around a house or car, frozen in precarious peaks and undercuts, mark the lines of the wind. The artist observes, and then sets to work, gleaning those effects that will support a pictorial image. Details are subdued by grand gestures. A composition is contrived which organizes the various elements selected. Since this artist could not resist taking up the brush when faced with such a challenge, the following will describe the working procedure for this particular instance. The subject is selected: view through neighboring yards to the beach. A canvas is chosen of suitable size and proportion: 20"x30’’, large enough for free brushwork and long enough for Sea Isle PTA Dance March 10 Get out your poodle skirts, saddle shoes, white bucks, school sweaters, etc. and join the fun on Saturday, March 10th at the St. Joseph auditorium, 44th & Central, SIC. sweeping horizontals. The horizontal and diagonal lines ihdicate the fencing and set a grid for, perspective; clothesposts provide stark verticals; these straight lines contain and accentuate the curving forms of the drifts. Leaning, reaching pines are planted about, their major thrusts and sags briefly indicated. And now, the color! The impact of color on the retina seems to increase as one looks. To the novice, the initial impression of white is accepted an maintained, while the artist beholds color bouncing everywhere. As I tend to get carried away with color, I restricted myself to four basic hues for starters: grey-brown for posts, fencing, and tree trunks, cool yellow for the snow; blue violet for shadows, and a pink that seemed to be everywhere. An organized approach such as this tends to keep the experience flowing, as one has less of a chance to be muddled by each new discovery; there is still room for quite a bit of variety within these bounds. The brown, for instance, is made with ultramarine blue, burnt umber and white. By changing the proportion of each of these colors, the range is extended, from a light warm brown to a dark cool grey. The yellow is a mixture of Naples yellow, cobalt blue and white: more white and yellow In the foreground and on surfaces facing the sun most directly; more blue in the distance and on surfaces oblique to the rays. A mixture of ultramarine blue and cobalt violet with white creates the shadows, changing in hue and intensity from background to foreground, from shadow edge to center. The pink that cannot be pinpointed, but permeates the whole scene is a pale mixture of alizarin crimson and white. All of these colors are used in the sky (delicately dispersed for a luminous gloom.) And so the painting progresses. By the way, I would like to suggest a few working procedures that help with ones clarity of presentation: 1) have a brush for each color; 2) work around the whole picture surface (avoid picking away at one section; 3) paint at arm’s length; 4) let each stroke reinforce the drawing; 5) occasionally view the painting from across the room. It may be noticed that these suggestions advise a strong, broad approach, and so they do; for of what use is a well-drawn snowflake on a badly painted drift?
