Wood Carver Displays Instruments In C.M.

By Libby Demp For eight hours last weekend, passersby, children and friends of John Klein, a Fleasantville wood carver, stopped by the Bookworm shop in Cape May to . see his collection of beautifully » carved instruments. Displayed 1 were a Renaissance Lute, Irish Harp, Hurdy-Gurdy, Debro, Mandelin, Hammer Dulcimer and Appalachian Dulcimers. Klein, 27, would occasionally strum one of the instruments, last Saturday and Sunday, but he was more interested in encouraging others to pick up the instruments, strum them and hear sounds of

long ago.

The instruments were made in his basement and on his kitchen table, each individually crafted. Some were inlaid with highly

polished aba lone and oyster shells, others were fitted with

pastel strips of wood, intricately Fitted into various designs. One of the dulcimers had unicorn carved on it. Another the

head of a god.

Asked whether he was first a wood carver or a musician, he said his love of working with wood got him into instrument making. When he heard a friend play a dulcimer, he ordered a kit and built his own. He said the carving absorbs him totally. He spends hours working on his designs. “It’s more fun than watching TV,” he commented, laughing softly. He likes to work with walnut which is easiest to work with and readily available. When asked if he has played his , instruments professionally, he TtiU hand'-carvrd Unteom’i Head is typical of Uw art Bracing Klein's n0< bc !' MKl ^ l<x;al
