Ocean City Enters Centennial Year

In the summer of 1879, group of astute Methodist clergymen sailed across Great Egg Harbor Bay in a catboat and founded Ocean City “upon the lonley sand, beneath the tangled branches of a tall Cedar tree.” In the years that fallowed, the area's desolate arifci rugged terrain was developed into a popular, >non-sectarian vacation community and designated America’s Greatest Family Resort." Prior to its founding, Qqpan City was known as "Peck’s Beach,” a land of brightly colored holly and bayberry thickets inhabited by wild cattle and hogs placed there in revolutionary days by mainland

farmers to keep them from marauding British. The Island’s first house was built by Parker Miller with material salvaged from the British barque, "Dashaway” wrecked on the beach in 1860. At a recent Council meeting. Mayor Chester J. Wimberg proclaimed 1979 as Ocean City’s Centennial year and pledged the City’s continued cooperation to an official Centennial formed in mid-1978. TTiis group has already formed ah agenda for the celebration and developed four Centennial sourvenors which are now available. These include: 3 inch Centennial Booster Decal, Centennial Glass Mugs, "Ocean City Memories,” a book by

Harold Lee, and a 7 inch Centennial Plate. The items are available at the 9th St. Information Center; City Hall Annex, 9th & Asbury Ave; and Public Relations Office, City Hall. OM fashioned costumes, circa 1870, will be a feature of Ocean City’s Easter Parade, April 15th on the Boardwalk. The colorful garb will underscore the City’s Centennial celebration now underway. The City’s Easter Parade begins 1 p.m. with finalists judged at approximately 3 p.m. at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. For information contact the Public Relations Department/F.O Box 174, Ocean City, N.J., 08226.
