James Taylor’s sister Kate returns to recording with an enjoyable, albeit not very stimulating, album on Columbia Records. Her vocal range is certainly limited, but Kate Taylor seems relaxed and the production, handled by James Taylor, is uncluttered and, therefore, enhances her singing much more than a lot of over-
bearing horns and strings.
Wish the same could be said about Jesse Colm Young’s • American Dreams” (Elektra), but, although in fine voice, his songwriting is hopelessly uninspired and the arrangements are stale and lifeless. Jesse Colin Young seems to be an aging hippie, who wants to play it safe with a proven formula. Only problem with that idea is that people eventually tire of hearing the same musical concept
rehashed over and over.
The Cryers’ debut on Mercury is full of incredible folk-rock sounds - especially “Shake It Up (Ain’t It Time)” and “It’sGonna Be A Heartbreaker." Possessing excellent voices, their harmonies are a treat, and the musical arrangements are always fitting. Unfortunately, this album lacks the power of The Cryers in concert, which, hopefully, they’ll be able to bring to light with their next release. The Cryers are a gifted band that deserves to be
heard.
Stephen Stills goes disco? Hard to believe, but it’s true, as “Thoroughfare Gap" (Columbia) has several disco tunes. Thtffinal outcome is disastrous, as Stills trying to sound black isn’t even close to being believable, and the musical backing is awkward and pretentious. Stephen Stills should have known better. Hailing from Canada, Wireless’ debut album. "Positively Human, Relatively Sane" (Mercury), is insipid heavy metal. They try every trick - from tape effects to acoustic numbers - but it’s impossible to take any of it seriously when they still haven't mastered th&r basic heavy metal sludge rock sound.
