Except for swimming, sunning, snorkeling and sailing there might seem to be little recreational activity on St. John. After you are here for a short time, you find there are many opportunities. Every day. notices are tacked on the trees neaf the Post Office $nd on the Bulletin Board: in Cruz Bay Square of coming events. There is a cricket game nearly every week. There are local softball games, and we watched the St. John team play the Canadian Softball champs. But the really big affairs are the • pish Fries”. Volunteer groups like the Rotary. Girl Scouts, etc. hold “Fish Fries” as yve would clam bakes, rumniage sales or spaghetti dinners for fund raising. There are usually two at least every week. We went to one today held at the Hawksnost beachfront estate of the late. J. Uobert Oppenheimer, the world renowned physicist who was one of the driving forces behind the atomic bomb. We walked down the dirt road off the North Shore Drive to .the level area adjoining
the house. Most fist) fries are pretty much the same. There is a. long table filled with alcohol and mixers, an ice chest filled with beer, and a table loaded with food conch, fungi, bullsfooh soup, Iriecf fish and barbecued chicken. There is also always a band, usually one with steel drums. All these bands have amplifers so they can easily be heard miles away. The one today. “Pillsbury Sound", plays each week at
C'aneel Bay. the Rockefeller resort. Usually, fish fries are held starting at 6 P.M., and the whole end -of the islahd can hear the music qntil they end - about 12 midnight The one at the Oppenheimer estate was unusual in that it was held during the afternoon. It's pleasant sitting on a sunny beach, listening to the music in the'background - and the food is pretty good, too
