I suspect that the old cliche

"free as a bird." has its roots in man’s fanciful envy of bird flight. The vreasdning would be. since birds\have wings, what can possibly prevent them from going wherever they please. FYeedom. here, is defined'as freedom of movement rather than the old Anglo and SAxon version that placed its emphasis on freedom

of choice (i.e. free doom). Well, this free as a bird notion

is obviously a left-over .from simpler times. Man has wings now (if you listen to EasternAirlines), buf. if the truth be known, there are a wholesome iot of things that are keeping me from taking off for Belize. Amohg them is the fact that I don’t care to lose my job; the car insurance premium notice just arrived in the mail and this column is due tomorrow. There are a few things that impinge on a bird's alleged freedom of movement, too. and just to make myself feel better.

I’m going to elaborate on them. The privilege of doing what you

want when you want to do it has a few basic prerequisites. Right off the bat it means that birds must - maintain at least a tenuous hold on life. To do this, they must eat now and then. Long ago they specialized'with respect to diet and the specialization goes on today. This opened the door to a more complete exploitation of the earth and in turn to greater numbers of birds of many dif-

ferent species.

Specialization is a two edged knife and fork. Although it means that in the long run more birds can use the same area and not compete with each other for food, it also means that they are tied to their particular food needs. If they let an inspirational wanderlust carry them to an area that doesn't carry their particular food item, it’s going to be tough cheese. Correspondingly, birds that depend on fish, like the Osprey, don t often vacation on the Gobi Desert. Birds like the Snail Kite of the Everglades do just fine as long as they stick to' snail country. A Snail Kite driven by some perverse urge to see Millville. N.J. would starve en

route even-if the flight path was marked out in prime porterhouse.* Family duties, tod, can put a crimp in a bird’s impulse to just go to four winds.Trie, better half and a brood of four bark at nest makp for some weighty family duties. Consider that at some times, birds CAN’T fly. Some species (including ducks and geese) go through a rapid molt and during the several weeks it takes to replace their flight feathers, they’re grounded. The California Condor is a masterful soaring bird but Up soaring ability is dependent upon outside lift. A Condor that launches itself before the morning sun has a chance to get some thermals cooking will find itself on the valley floor, looking up. The Common Loon is a strong flyer ... once it gets airborne and that’s the catch. Loons have to take off from , water. ^ loon that lands on wet pavement under the mistaken belief that it is some sort of long, narrow lake is grounded until some kind soul drops it in a lake or the arctic ice cap melts. All other things being equal, there is one final deterent to rampant wanderlust. A bird on • its home turf is far. far safer than one that is cruising through an area for the first time. Migration is the period of maximum danger for birds. The wishful thinking yeoman farmer who looked up from his barley field and envied the "freedom of birds" never had to contend with killer winds, sudden storms, radio towers in the fog, high tension lines, hungry predators or high brass 2’s. 4’s.. 5’s. 6’s and low brass t's’s,- 8’s and 9’s. Burdette Tomlin Opens Doors For Oral Screening CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE - Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital will make available its Clinic examining rooms for an ' Oral Screening.
