A hospital is a special place. Most of us would chose not to go there unless we absolutely had to. You don’t go to a hospital because you’re feeling tip top. You go because you’re sick or you’re about to have a baby, or because your family physician has ordered a sefies of tests. A hospital reflects the life in general of a community. There are enough TV soap operas, novels and movies about
WILLIAM H. WALDRON. Ill Hospital Administrator hospitals, doctors and hypochondriacs that give a negative side to the medical field. Last week’s issue of the Herald featured a front page story on the advent of spring in Cape May County. It briefly lit on the 3.8 million dollar expansion program now underway at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital. This week the Herald went back to Burdette Tomlin to learn more about the extensive remodeling and building program underway that will ultimately update patient care and provide Cape May County with better health
services.
According to William H. Waldron. HI. Administrator of the hospital, the project consists of three major areas - two new buildings, an east wing and a west wing, and expansion of parking facilities. Thirty-six spaces in front of the south lobby entrance are nearing completion, the last of 300 additional parking spaces that have been added. “There’s a npw spirit in the hospital nowadays." said Waldron. "The staff is immensely proud of what’s happening. They are looking forward to the new facilities that will give our patients the/good health care we feel they deserve " The new expansion program is the final phase of a three part improvement project. Phase I and II were completed in 1974 when the Whitkar Wing was added ort* housing the emergency department. EKG. physical therapy, respiratory therapy, admissions, outpatient, a new surgical unit and a renovated medical unit. The new west wing is being
attached to the side of the hospital that parallels Rt. 9. It will house an extended dietary department on the ground floor, and a larger maternity section on the first floor as well as a second
floor pediatric area.
"On the ground floor we are adding dry storage areas, a walkin freezer, a diary refrigerator and a meat and vegetable refrigerator. There will be new stoves and a new dishwashing area. We’re excited about the new conveyer assembly line in the dietary department that will .get food more quickly to our /patients, so they’ll get their hot food hot and their cold food cold."
said Waldron.
The new maternity section, according to Waldron, will make Burdette one of the most modem maternity centers in the area. The unit will house four brand new labor rooms, two private delivery rooms, a solarium, an anesthesia room and utility
rooms.
A renovated section of the maternity department will have a new nursery close to the main entrance of the department where immediate family can see the babies. There will also be a feeding room for babies who might have to remain after their mothers go home. A fathers’ waiting rdom will
