In The Old Sport's Opinion

Parking Facilities at MT High School Gym

By Bill Sherman This is a story that must be told. The Old Sport has been mulling it over ever since he nearly had a heart attack walking a quarter mile from a distant parking area to the gym entrance bucking the worst blizzard of the winter. As a member of the working press, he expected to park in a corner of the lot near the gym. But no one who wears two hats. President of the Board of Education and Chief of the Fire Company, had directed that no cars be allowed in the lot, only the school busses. He wanted the lot clear so that the tire engines could get in there is case of an emergency. Now this could have been a good thought except that it did not go far enough. How would the engines get in the lot when cars were parked on both sides of the access streets? The access streets belonged to Middle Township and had to be policed by their personnel. But there were no signs forbidding parking on either side of the street and the first arrivals parked wherever there was room. The late comers had to park in the school lots farther and farther from the gym.

This was only the first incident. The next time someone left the gate ajar and the Old Sport was able to get in the lot. He parked in a far comer and went in to the game much to the consternation of the parking attendant. But now comes the clincher. Having another engagement, the Old Sport left the game 15 minutes early, and drove his car to the gate. He was able to open the gate, but io and behold, two cars were parked on the other side so he could not get out. Noting the license plates, he took the information back inside to the proper authorities, who thought it was pretty funny andsaid I would have to wait until the game was over. Not this time, for the Old Sport was ready to have the public address system announce the numbers of the offending. This threat brought some action and finally a woman moved her car and the Old Sport made a dignified exit. Does this sound like proper arrangements are made to handle the crowds that come out to Middle’s basketball games? Why can't the high school authorities get together with the township people in charge and set irp a working arrangement? This

reporter talked to the high school vice-principal who feels they are doing their job as far as their jurisdiction * extends. They are keeping the inner sanctum clear of cars. Amen. He also talked to the captain of the Middle Twp. Police Dept., who showed him a plan they have drawn up, taking care of the access road and directing cars to proper parking areas. TTie only trouble is that he is waiting approval of his plan from Trenton. He has been waiting all winter and the approval will prdbably come through during the summertime. As far as the lot of the high school, this reporter feels that the working people at the gameofficials, press, ticket sellers and collectors-should be allowed to park there along with the player buses, without endangering the safety of the school. The Old Sport realizes that after this critical report, he may no longer be welcome in the high school, where he has always received the utmost in courtesy and cooperation. So the next Sideline Shots column may have to be about another high school and its activities; but my heart still belongs to Middle.
