Need Evidence For SS Card . People^ho anticipate that they or their children will need social , secunty numbers in the near future might well take some time to get together the evidence they w*ll need when they apply, Delton Brooks, social security manager ‘ in Wrldwtiod. said recently Everyone, no matter how young -or old, must furnish evidence of* age. identity, and U S. citizenship or lawful admission status when applying for a social security number. In addition, a person 18 or older must apply in person It is a good idea to applx well before the number is needed. Brooks said, since it takes about six weeks to receive the number after the necessary evidence is submitted.' Only original or certified copies of documents should be submitted. Photocopies are not acceptable and , documents are subject to verification. A birth ceftificbte or church record of birth or . baptism recorded before a person's fifth birthday is preferred as proof of a person's age and place of birth for people bom in the U.S. Other documents can be used if these are not available. Evidence of -identity should show the person’s name and signature or photograph. Naturalized U.S. citizens should- show their citizenship papers. Non U.S. citizens should show their immigration papers. \Brooks said that if parents are having trouble getting evidenceof identity for young children, they migHt consider clinic or doctor's records, vaccination certificates, day Care or nursery school records\ insurance policies, or church school records, as possible sources. • The leaflet "Applying for social security number" lists many different proofs that can be used. Letters To The Editor
To the Editor: Honorable William J. Hughes, M.C. 327 Cannon House Office Building Washington, D.C. 20515 Dear Congressman Hughes: \ As an American citizen, I have always believed, and still do. that we live in the greatest nation on earth. , * I am deeply concerned, as are millions of my fellow Americans, about the direction in which my nation is travelling. Due to the Carter administration, which has proven itself to be clearly inept, my nation is rapidly becoming a second rate power. The recent blunder by the administration in Mexico is a prime example of a practically non-existent foreign policy. Only the.announced peace agreement between Egypt and Israel has lent some credibility to our foreign policy. I believe that President Carter really tries, but is handicapped by a lack of .experience. He is undoubtedly surrounded by a group of inexperienced cabinet members and staff. Perhaps most on the minds today of all Americans is the oil crisis and the devastating effect it is having on our economy. I call your attention to Energy Secretary. James Schlesinger Secretary Schlesinger reminds me of former Secretary of the Treasury William Simon. If you remember, everytime Secretary Simon opened his mouth and predicted "doom and gloom", the economy did In fact take a "nosedive”. Remember Secretary Simon predicting that the price of food, energy, interest rates, etc., would rise? Sure enough, within a week the prices of these items would rise. Did Secretary Simon have a crystal ball? Perhaps it was a signal to big business and the banking industry to increase their prices and interest rates. Unfortunately, we are now faced with Secretary Schlesinger, who is apparently following in the footsteps of Secretary Simon.
Is it possible that our oil companies are not happy with their record profits and are merely waiting for the price of gas and home heating oil to be rcregulated? Watch and see how mdeh gas and oil becomes available when the prices rise! IS it possible that Secretary Schlesinger. who just predicted that the price of unleaded gasoline will reach $1.00 per gallon by the end of 1979. gave a clear signal to the oil companies to begin raising their prices? You bet he did! The price of all gas

and oil has risen dramatically since his "forcast!’. Do you know what the increase in tj»e price of oil is going to do to the* American economy? Auto workers will be the first to join the unemployment lines. Who will be aWe tb afford to purchase new “unleaded” American made cars, and then have enough tgndlrit? n not forget h’t it gqing to be great when the richest nation on earth is sitting and working (those who still have jobs) in the dark because we can not afford the cost of oil and gas for heat and light? . I honestly feel sorry for all Americans, particularly the senior citizens and the working poor- who are barely existing at this time. How about the working middle class, who are seeing their incomes and buying* power ■ dwindle every day? The American people, as you and I know, are a great and understanding people. In times of national crisis, they give of themselves unselfishly and are willing to sacrifice. Blit, they are
reaching the end of the rope. The American people.feel that they are being "ripped off”. One burning question which continually arises, is why this nation can not use the great coal resources we possess. It has been reported that our coal reserves could supply enough energy for the next .200 years. Why not convert our present oil consumption at electric generating plants to coal use? Pollution? Remember the moon? Our technology got up there, we ought to be smart enough lo figure how to uSe coal without pollution. Just think, a whole coal industry could be expanded, creating more jobs. The oil cartel could retire with our millions or should I say "billions" of American dollars. Congressman Hughes, we can not continue on the course the present administration has set. It is leading to unemployment, mistrust of our leaders and general despair. .Very truly yours, w) Robert Hentges, Surrogate
