GET A Mandated Council Named

A Private Industry Council <PIC> has recently been established in Cape May County, as part of a new thrust under the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act. The PIC is mandated under, provisions of the CETA Reauthorization of 1978 which established a new Title VII. the Private Sector Initiative Program (PSIP). Their primary function is to ‘‘establish employment and training programs for the econotnically disadvantaged within the private sector. Eventually it is hoped that this approach to creating permanent. Unsubsidized jobs within the private sector will replace the subsidized public service jobs which are currently the primary kinds of jobs funded under CETA. The Cape May County PIC is composed of representatives from business, educational facilities, organized labor and community based organizations with at least 50% from business as the legislation requires. The initial meeting was held last month. At that time the members of the PIC became acquainted with each other and their role in the development of the new program.' Representatives from the New Jersey Balance-of-State Prime Sponsor, which has responsibility for CETA programs in Cape May County, discussed the concept of PSIP and the importance of the PIC in u implementing' PSIP. John Witts. ' Cape May County CETA Director, will provide staff support for the PIC through the local CETA Office. After a question and answer period, the members of the PIC organized and chose Joseph Meadowcraft of MEDCO Manufacturing Co. as temporary chairman. The Directors reminds all motorists that studded snow tires are permitted on New Jersey roads from November 15 to April

1 each year.

Drivers found to have the tires on their cars after the deadline face possible ticketing and fine.

CH Kiwanis At Work On School Playground The Cape May Court House Kiwanis has a manpower call for this weekend, March 31 and April 1, as work progresses on the playground project of Elementary School #1. Dump trucks are needed to pickup sand for the project. Jersey Cape Shell Club Dr. George Davis, Curator and Chairman of the Department of Malacology, Academy of Natural Sciences. Philadelphia, will be the speaker Monday, April 2, 8 p.m. at the Jersey. Cape Shell Club, Wetlands Institute. Stone Harbor Blvd. His topic "How Snail Faunas Evolve” will also have a pictorial presentation of India, Thailand. Africa and Laos in connection with the subject of continental drift. The public is invited to attend.

The second meeting of the PIC was held during mid March at which time it was decided that the first step would be to identify the needs of local private employers in terms of training and employment. Donald Kelly. Gyde Wark and Ray McCoy will work together to develop a questionnaire which then will be sent to private sector employers to determine what their needs are. Various possible training programs were discussed but implementation will await the input from.employed. Kelly will also begin work in updating the business directpry for the county. Enthusiasm for the PSIP program is high among the PIC members and the unemployed economically disadvantaged members of Cape May County’s population will have more opportunities in terms of training and emplayment when the program becomes fully operational. The date for the next PIC meeting is April 10.
