RAGE 7
Daylight expands, warming (he earth and drawing its innards out. The weather is erratic, a cloud rolls in: a charge of lightning. The scene shifts: we are caught unawares as a new landscape unfurls! And in the nick of time! Just.when studio torpor was setting in. with memory of light and color growing dim. and interiors and still-lifes getting flat, then BOIINNGG. spring arrives with its flood of revelations. As witness to the beginning of Life, we may notice similar patterns of growth among various foiins. Those of us who follow the unfolding of a bud over
several days 1 time may catch the spiral effect of the opening: up and out into a three-dimensional world. This uncoiling of spring is Life’s harmony in motion that artists have sought to capture since the first mark. Ancient Egyptians and Far Eastern artists used the lotus as symbol of this event, and Greeks, finding the pattern in nautilus shells and ram s horns, used the double spiral to grace the tops of their Ionic columns. (Take note: it is no coincidence that this month is ruled by Aries the Ram.) This spiral design is obvious in a fern fron or a pussy willow, where bods mark a coiled path winding around the branch.
