4 PHILLIPS ROCK 'N' CHAIR Restaurant and Lounge has announced the appointment of George L. Phillips. Jr., shown above, as Banquet Manager. In making the announcement. George S. Phillips Sr., said that the newly opened "Top of the Rock" room, with its own kitchen, bar and dance floor, necessitates this appointment. George, Jr. has been supervising previous banquet affairs and has acquired much experience in the field. The Rock V Chair is a frequent gathering place for many private functions, incMing fraternal organizations, banking and real estate associations, industrial seminars, political meetings as well as class reunions and wedding receptions.
The high flying and often I controversial Jefferson Airplane drastically toned down their act in the mid-seventies and. along with a name change to The Jefferson Starship, the group developed into a solid mainstream rock outfit. “Gold” (Grunt/RCA) collects some of their strongest material including “Caroline." "Miracles,” “Count On Me,’’ and “Runaway." Grace Slick might be the one to grabe the headlines, but “Gold" clearly points out the brains behind The Jefferson Starship is vocalist/writer Marty Balin. He’s a soulful performer, whose strength lies in his ability to consistently stir emotions in his listeners. "Gold” is a masterful collection of tunes. Don Brewer. Craig Frost and Mel Schacher were all members of the popular heavy metal group Grand Funk. Since Grand Funk
disbanded, all its members have been involved In recording projects, none of which have gotten very far off the ground. These three are together again in a new group. Flint, and judging from their first album for Columbia Records, it would be safe to say things should gel for them one more time. Their sound is basic rock and roll with some traces of Motown. The singing is clear and the band plays with drive and honesty. Flint Is a
group worth hearing.
Blackfoot is another new straight-ahead rock and roll band, and, while their debut, "Strikes" (Atco). isn’t as rewarding as Flint’s, it is, nevertheless, a promising record. The original material isn’t very consistent, but their covers of Spirit’s "I Got A Line On You" and Free’s "Wishing Well" actually stand up to the original versions. Blackfoot needs to tighten up a bit before

recording their second platter. At first, success came easy to Badfinger. Their single raced up the charts and they were always favorably compared to The Beatles when they played their brand of infectious, harmony filled British pop music. But then, something went wrong. The hits stopped, they lost their recording contract, and, finally, their leader Pete Ham took his own life. Badfinger called it quits and split to form new bands, but none of them possessed the magic Badfinger had. Well, fans can rejoice, because the legendary group has reformed. Down to a duo of Joey Molland and Tom Evans, they show on "Airwaves" (Elektra) they still have a lot of great music left in them. A couple of rockers seem forced, but it’s a moot point, as their harmonies and songwriting are still majestic. It's good to have Badfinger back. Camel is one of the few "progressive-rock" bands whose music isn’t a chore to listen to. They know how to come up with a solid melody and they keep their soloing to the point and Interesting. “Breathless" (Arista) is their most cohesive work, yet, and it just may be the one to break them out of their cult status and into the center ring. Camel never looks down at their audience, and that just might be the reason their music is enjoyable.
