After a fairly long hiatus, Bad Company has returned with ’‘Desolation Angels" (Swan Song). No drastic changes, as the group continues to make weak material sound strong because of Paul Rodgers' amazingly powerful vocals and the razor-sharp guitar breaks of Mitk Ralphs. Bad Company's only goal has been to produce raw, simple rock and roll, and “Desolation Angels" is sure to please their hardcore following. Out of nowhere, actually Los Angeles, Van Halen shocked the world when their debut album sold two and a half million copies last year. "H" (Warner Brothers) is more of the same heavy metal music Van Halen gave us last time around. The songs are nothing more than vehicles for flashy guitar breaks and pseudo-soul shouting. But, beneath the poise, is a band that is as cutting and talented as they come in the world of rock. Unfortunately, I have the feeling Van Halen, having tasted success, won’t be experimenting much with their music and they'll eventually become as tedious and forgotten as Deep Purple and Grand Funk before them. Local radio stations went wild playing City Boy’s delightful "5.7.0.5," and, along with that tune, City Boy’s "City Boy Book Early" (Mercury) is filled with melodic tunes, which are played and sung well. Although they often resemble 10CC, City Boy are able to hold their own due to sheer talent. This is their most consistent outing, yet. Duncan Browne’s "The Wild Places" (Sire) is his fourth album in ten years, and this time he seems to have enough control over his melodramatic tunes to expect him to gamer more attention than before. Unlike most of Duncan Drowne’s singersongwriter colleagues (not counting Kevin Ayers, Terry Reid, and the late Nick Drake) he is a true original, who bass his music on classical and rock themes instead of a folk tradition. Duncan Browne’s music is so hauntingly personal it becomes rather easy to grasp his obscure images and unpredictable melodies. The Hawklords (formerly Hawkwind) have bounced from label to label in the seventies, issuing a Burdette Brunch The Bayberry Twigs branch of the Burdette Tomlin Hospital will hold its regular monthly meeting Wed.. healthy string of rock albums with science fiction concepts. Their first long player for Charisma makes the rough years seem worthwhile, as this is an album that demands attention. Bob Calvert’s forceful vocals sound fantastic over the relentless, hard driving, chordbased rhythms of the band. The Hawklords . have finally made the album fanatics knew they had in them. Along with Cars and Elvis Costello. 1978’s big sensations had to be Cheap Trick. After two underrated albums, they finally hit pay dirt with number three, and their just released fourth, "At Budokan" (Epic) is safe at home in the top-twenty of the trade charts. This live album is a must for fans and the perfect introduction to those who’ve read about them, but haven’t heard them on the radio, yet. It’s graced with their strongest tunes, such as “Surender," "I Want You To Want Me," and "Come On Come On." Cheap Trick have successfully blended the progressive pop of British bands like The Kinks, Who. and Move, with the energy of heavy metal outfits like Deep F^urple, and, consequently, Cheap Trick just might be the finest group in America today.
