Two days after the first sprouts of dunegrass were spotted along the beach path, the artist sets out in search of a painting. Facing the season, I choose the Southern tip of the Seven Mile Beach. "Finding the spot” is one of the adventures of landscape painting. In this instance, I was looking for the meeting of land, sea and sky Parking at the end of the road (from which point inward the land has been mercilessly stripped, flattened and stoned), I head into the contours of the beach. Due to the walking distance, I travel light, armed with pencils, paper and eraser and the hope that I might capture, in one sitting, enough information for the proposed painting. Choosing a remote spot gives one a chance to get the feel of things: to move through its workings and to sense its atmosphere. Zeroing in on a view, I perch high on the lee side of a dune and soak it in. From the very beginning of a , sketch, one should be aware of the picture surface; the expansive panorama is to be reduced
the scene is captured, the artist returns to the studio and begins the painting which will be in acrylics. A heavy paper board has been primed with gesso and sealed with clear medium, the horuon is set in and the basic composition is established with a few marks. Since the values are the backbone of this place, a grisaille underpainting is made in which various tones of grey set in distance and foreground, bush, cloud, etc. And now the color! In this instance, the palette is restricted to five colors, which will be mixed in various combinations along with white: ultramarine blue, pmssian blue, burnt sienna, yellow ochre and violet. Since the underpainting has defined the structure and tonal values of the scene, these colors can be applied as thin washes diluted with the medium. To carry out the effect of distance, the foreground colors are clearer and more intense while the background is subdued and lightened. This must be remembered with every stroke in order that the

within its edges without losing the sense of scale. The first line drawn is the horizon, placed about two^ fifths up from the bottom of the page: next, the largest land areas are worked in and a composition is developed. (Advice from one of my teachers may be given here: "Start with the broadest forms and work down to the details; then if you should happen to die before completing the painting, people will think that you knew what you were doing.”) /n Since my materials were limited, any color references had to be mentally noted while the sketch would show tone and line. Wildwood as seen in the distance across a stretch of shimmering water, is indicated with a light-toned band, its buildings and towers simplified to an irregular edge against the sky. With the distance tone selected, advancing land areas can be developed with bolder line and higher contrast. Bushes and edges are shifted for the sake of the composition and grasses become rhythmic lines that accentuate the earth's contours and the picture’s design. When a general sense of LT GOP Club Meets Tonight Tbe regular meeting of the Lower Twp GOP Club will be held tonight at 8 p.m. New members are welcome.
illusion of space may be effective. Shadows in the foreground may be an intense blue; in the distance they blend into the overall mass The sky overhead has a more distinct hue than at the horizon. The bush in the hill over there will not be as sharply defined as this one. This working of tones and colors helps to bring about an image that is presented as a harmonious chord. And so the painting develops beyond this writing.
