Chief of Police Joseph E. Foley of Avalon has filed his report on the activities of the department throughout 1978. Speeders and parking regulation violations dominate the traffic docket.The criminal docket is dominated by the noise, alcohol and marijuana abuses with assault and battery up there in number. In general, violations were down from 1977. Criminal arrests in 1978 were 280 as compared to 456 during 1977. Drug arrests dropped from 93 in 1977 to 48 and juvenile problems decreased to 61 from 101 in 1977. Wildwood Crest - Leader Prihters, the islands largest commercial printing establishment, has recently purchased a Chief 217 two-color offset press. The $15,000 press coupled with the existing bank of presses will enable the shop to do more 2 color work and expedite delivery by 2 or more days according to owner Dennis Hall. Hall also informed Mayor Guhr, who was in the shop to see the new machine in action, that the press will necessitate
hiring an additional pressman and one additional person in the composing room. Hall went on to say that “our objective has always been to deliver a high quality printed product within the shortest possible time period. The new Chief 217 and our expanding composing room will enable us to do this. In our seasonal, economy, quality and speed are the greatest services we feel our shop has to offer the local business person.”

Detective ShutUeworth also attended The Organized Crime Seminar, Basic and Advanced Photography School and Police Firearm’s Instructor School was attended by Ptlmn. Taylor where he qualified as expert. In The National Rifle Association Matches, Taylor received the third place medal in rapid fire competition and 25-yard competition. In the Police Marksman Association competition, he received first place in the practical police course, and rapid fire, third place in 50-yard slow fire and the second place trophy for overall. Ptlmn. Frederick Gambill %ook the Police Officer’s Refresher Course and also received an Associate Degree in Science from Atlantic Community College. The CPR Basic Rescuer Course and Fire Training School were attended by Ptlmn. Anderson and the Hostage Negotiation Seminar by Det./Sgt.

During the 1977-78 season, the Avalon Police Department Pistol Team finished fourth in county competition. Team Captain Louis Taylor finished second overall and received a trophy for second high average with 99.48%. He also received a trophy for third highest individual score and a plaque listing three perfect scores shot during the
season.

Between the bad weather and injuries to several key players, coach Chuck Dougherty cannot be pleased thus far in the season. Only one game has been played with Buena, and little can be ascertained at this point as to how good the team will be. A few warm, dry days and they’ll be able to perform. On the squad are P-John Collins. Neal Chase, Phil Abate. 2B Dan Fowler, 3B Dale Gerhard, SS Jim Pickering, RF Jimmy Killian, CF Craig Reeves, LF Garry Hunter. Also, John McCray, Bob Miquore, Chris Nichols, Mark Robbins, Rick Stout, Dave Tanner and Artie Cannon. Managers are: Lisa Dramis, Donna Webb, Mayling Eaves, and Mary Cross.
