There are few. thing* in life that can boast of being both meritorious and free. Unhappily, nonprofit research, education and birding organizations are not among them. The Cape May Bird Observatory is a member -sponsored organization. As a result, the number of projects that we can undertake is dependent upon ■ that support. Fortunately, CMBO members are as generous as they are dedicated. Unfortunately, program expansions and an unanticipated rise in the cost of peanut butter have

taken their toll and we have had to develop new

resource strategies.

Now, if I were the person reading this article, I would be getting vaguely suspicious at this point. The course that it seems to be plotting will carry it pretty dam close to the right hip pocket. You have had fair warning now. This is your last chance. Anybody who is not interested in a Bird-A-Thon

should read no farther!

Yes, I suppose I would have kept on reading, too. A Bird-A-Thon is very much like a Walk-A-Thon.

Instead of a pledge being given for so much per mile, it is given for so much per species of bird. 'Ihete birds may be seen by you, a birding friend, or one of the official leaders like Rich Kane (New Jersey Audubon Society Research Director), Dave Ward (Avalon resident) or myself. The date of the Bird-A-Thon is May 5. Not only is this the peak of the spring migration but it is also the date of the Cape May Bird Observatory’s Spring Birding Weekend. So, if you plan to be birding on May 5 and you want to help the Cape May Bird Observatory, simply make a pledge to contribute 10 cents or 25 cents (or whatever) to CMBO for each species seen. For example, a pledge of 25 cents and 50 species seen equals $17.50. If you do not plan to be out birding that

day (or if you aren’t a birder), you may sponsor anyone who will be, including one of the official leaders or pledge for the total number of species seen on May 5 by the Spring Birding Weekend group (probably in the vicinity of 140 species). What’s more, you don’t have to fill out an IRS Form 1040 to enter. All you have to do is send the following information to:

Bird-A-Thon, Box 3, Cape May Point, NJ 09212. 1. The Name of the person being sponsored. 2. Your own name and address. 3. The amount pledged per species. If you are pledging your self or are being sponsored by someone else, send a copy of your species list to the same Bird-A-Thon address on Monday, May.7.

Now, I am the first to admit that a Bird-A-Thon is a crazy idea. But perhaps things have to be a little crazy when being generous can also mean being fun.
