MTHS Baseball Record Now Stands At 2 And 1
By Rill Shrrman Despite cold, windy, and wet weather, tne Middle Township PantWers have managed to play three baseball games, coming up with a record of 2 wins and 1 loss. When Memorial Field was wet, they traveled to Buena to open the season losing by a score ot 8-2. John Collins pitched for Middle with John McCray behind the bat. The rest of the line-up was as follows: IB - Dave Tanner; 2B - Dan Fowler; SS - Jim Pickering; 3B - Neal Chase; LF - Garry Hunter; CF - Graig Reeves; RF - Jimmy Killian. The Panthers did not have their batting eyes, getting just 3 hits and 2 runs. Those connecting safely were Dale Gerhard. Jim Pickering, and John McCrag. For Buena, Ed Loffler pitched and got the win. At home Middle Twp. took a tough Wildwood Catholic team, with a new coach, Ralph Riggitano. They won the game 3 to 1. For Middle, John Collins pitched and got the win, going the distance.
although having a rough 7th inning. John McCray was his catcher. For Wildwood Catholic. Embs pitched and Tarbottom caught. Embs took the loss. In a return game with Buena, played at Memorial Field, the Panthers got their revenge by winning 90. Dale Gerhard got the shut-out pitching a strong game and assuring coach Dougherty of a good number two twirler. Dale had 5 strikeouts, walked and allowed only 3 hits to a strong Buena team. All three hits were singles. At the bat Middle had 12 hits wUh 8 RBI’s, McCray drove in 2 runs, Pickering also had 2. as well as John Collins; Single RBI's went to Reeves and Migliore. who had recovered from his injury, which kept him out of the first two games. Middle’s runs came in the first inning, 1; 2nd inning 2; 4th inning 1, with 2 each in the 5th & 6th innings. Coach Dougherty revised his line-up slightly, with Ricky Stout going to leftfield. Craig Reeves was in center and Jimmy Killian in right field. Dave Tanner covOTed 1st base, Danny
Fowler was at second, with Pickering at short and Migliore at third base. John Collins was the designated hitter. In their big 2nd inning, the Panthers scored 3 runs on three consecutive hits by Jimmy Killan. Jim Pickering, and John McCray. Killian scored on McCrays single, while Pickering came in on an infield out and Reeves scored on a wild pitch. With this win Middle Township has to be considered one of the strong teams of the CAL along with Buena. St. Joseph s and Hammonton The team now has a hiatus until April 24. when they take on Ocean City at home. Games start at 4:00 p.m. Pleasantville will be played away on the 25th and Hammonton away on April 27th. Golf Clinics Will Begin The Avalon Golf Club will be starting group lessons for women. There will be two clinics for beginners and intermediate players. The beginners clinic will start Wednesday, April 25th at 2:00 and run five consecutive weeks, each lesson lasting one hour. The intermediate clinic will be of the same format on Friday, April 27th at 2:00. The classes will be taught by PGA professional Bill Haines, who has been at Avalon for three seasons. He also works at Walt Disney World under the supervision of Phil Ritson, the internationally known teacher of Gary Player and Sally Uttle. CM Co. Riding Club In Saddle The Cape May County Riding Club officially opened their spring activities calendar with- 1 a trail ride recently. Fortyeight participants from New Jersey and Pennsylvania followed trails on horseback, crisscrossing Cape May County. The club's next scheduled activity will be a Gymkhana held on the club grounds May 6th and the annual Spring Western Show at the Dias Creek Road address on May 12th at8:30a.m.
