The Cape May County Private Campground Association recently voted to embark on an agressive TV and Radio Advertising campaign this spring. John Davis, President of the group announced that the campaign is geared to the Greater Philadelphia area and Canada to help assure Cape May County leadership role as the Camping Capital of the Jersey Coast. A special committee of Harry Divins, John Turner and Al Thomborough was formed to expedite the final details with Coastline Advertising Agency which will co-ordinate the campaign. The commercials will, for the most part, sell Cape May County as a great vacation area and of course mention the area’s excellent camping. The Association announced that approximately 15,000 camping sites are in the County, with 10,000 being short term vacation or travel sites. The others are seasonal sites. In entering into this campaign the Association is hoping that other groups will follow to help advertise and publicize the great vacation area of the Jersey

Cape.

The Association also reviewed some interesting facts on the camping vacationer. In a recent Civil Defense Tests Disaster Preparations On Saturday, March 31, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. a County-wide Civil Defense Exercise was held to test the capabilities of radio and telephone communications systems currently operating within the county under Civil

Defense.

Scenario for the drill was an assumed storm of severe intensity with attendant tide problems for the shore communities with wind damage and flooding road problems for inland municipalities that intended to involve all emergency services. The municipalities of Cape May, West Cape Mayt Cape May Point, Wildwood Crest, Wildwood, North Wildwood, Stone Harbor, Avalon, Sea Isle City, Lower and Middle Township participated and performed professionally. Emergency Operating Center staff members, mostly Cape May County employees, along with Navel ROTC cadets from Middle Township High School and members of the Stone Harbor Amateur Radio Klub (SHARK), gave freely of their time during the exercise without compensation on a nor-

mally off day.

Cape May County Coordinator, Lyndon H. Simmerman, Deputy coordinator, John Friedrich and William Gery, Radiological Monitoring Officer and County Meteorologist credit in great part the success of the drill to the effort and planning of former County Coordinator Emeritus, Leland A.

survey conducted by a national pulbication, it is projected that a camping family spends $100 a day while on their camping vacation. Relating this to Cape May County, it could be conservayively stated that $35 million could be injected into the local economy, according to the Association. Another interesting fact is that they only spend an average of $8.25 per night for a campsite. This means that over $90 a day is returned to the various other segments of the resort economy. Translating figures into

dollars the Campground Association estimates a 70 day camping season. With 62 per cent occupancy of the possible 10,000 travel campsites this ap-

proximates 450,000 camping nights. From this can be concluded that, using the $100 a day figure, the $35 million dollar figure is conservative.
