Atlantic City, by Warren B Murphy and Frank Stevens, is a novel about the power struggle between local interests, big business and the Mafia in Atlantic City and it is extremely readable. It has all the ingredients of a good book - a fast moving plot .atopicai setting and memorable characters. BIT - South Jersians who read it will soon realize that the authors have little in depth knowledge of the area. Oh. they have done their homework, and have perhaps visited Atlantic City briefly, but it is fairly obvious that most of their research was done elsewhere — probably on the West Coast. There are few major errors (although none familiar with the area would have mentioned a singles bar in Ocean City), but the omission of certain names we would take for granted, points up their deficient knowledge. Newspaper stori^ play a part, but except for a fictitious Atlantic City paper, the NEWARK STAR LEDGER is abolit the only one mentioned by name. The PRESS, and the Philadelphia papers, which are the best read local ones, are not. Mileages from place to place are used (maps must have been a basic part of their research), but characters crossing the Delaware always do it over an unnamed bridge. Most of us would normally say - the Walt Whitman or B«n
Franklin.
Perhaps this seems like nit-picking, but it seems to me that authors who spend the time to write a book - and this is well-written-owe it to their readers to give them a more realistic picture of the locale if that

By Leslie Sleyson ] locale is an important part of the book. Except for scenes on the Boadwalk, and brief mentions of Zaberers and the Smithville Inn. the setting could have been any city if gambling had' been in-
troduced.
