By W. Wallace Smith Some time ago, due to visual impairment, I handed my weekly column to Ms. Cheryl Crews and she has written in my stead for some time. Fortunately. my sight has somewhat improved, and as Cheryl will be occupied from time to time with several Art soirees, she has temporarily handed the writing over to me again. I readily admit that the articles by Cheryl Crews have had more sparkle than I was ever able to inject, but. if you are willing to bear with me, I may turn out some stuff that will be informative Yard Sale Apr. 21 A yard sale to benefit VFW Ladies Auxiliary *7476 will be held at Tozour residence, Rt. i*9. and pique your interest too. At least I hope it will. Let’s see. Where was I when I was forced to give up this writing? I believe the subject I meant to go into was paper, which is the ground for drawing and watercolor painting. Paper was once of all rag content, but today, with all our garments made of synthetics, rags of linen or cotton are hard to get, so the price of good paper has risen sharply, as has everything else. The best paper for watercolor is imported - I use D’Arches. which is a French import. Another fine paper is Fabriano, made in Italy; however, the pr> cc is on a par with the quality, so I do not think the amateur or the student could go far wrong by compromising with the American made Strathmore papers which are made in different weights to suit many purposes, also in different surfaces to fit your needs. I use Strathmore all the time for drawing, so I do not feel I am steering you wrong in

this.

Some papers are made of wood pulp, as are newspapers. This type will yellow before too long and will mar any drawings done on it. I doubt too. if it will last too long, but may soon look like an old newspaper, and soon the yellowing and aging will be spotty. So if you want your work to last, a good paper is worth the difference in price: whereas, if you want a surface to practice on any good grade will suffice. I would be quite pleased if manufacturers of sketchbooks would be required to put on the front cover, along with the company name and the trade name, just what grade of paper is contained. When I was writing this feature instead of pinch hitting. I urged you to draw. draw, and draw some more, for practice makes perfect. I once again urge you to do so.

yuinn Enlists In Mayoral Race

Owen Quinn, 43 year old

Avalon Commissioner and businessman, has officially announced his candidacy

for Mayor of Avalon. Quinn, who handily

defeated former Commissioner Lloyd Riggall by a 3 to 1 margin in a special recall election last August, said that he intends to run an energetic campaign which will put emphasis on his accomplishments since

he has been in office. "When I was elected I

made a commitment to take action on certain matters important to Avalon." And he asserts “I have carried out each and

every one of those com-

mitments."

Among his accomplishments. Quinn cited the removal of unnecessary parking meter poles, the establishment of a rescue squad, the restoration of Murray Wolf as lifeguard captain, and establishing the selling of beach tags on the beach. "As Mayor, I intend to aggressively seek state and federal help to get our inland waterways dredged, and put emphasis on beach conservation." Quinn said. “In addition, it is most urgent that we provide immediate maintenance to

our boardwalk as well as establishing year round recreational activities." he

said.

"As a long-time resident. I have the best interests of Avalon at heart and I sincerely believe that I can

provide the most aggressive and energetic leadership on a full time

basis," he concluded. Quinn, an Avaloh

resident since 1945, is the owner-operator of Sullivan's Department

Store.
