An Open Letter On Energy Awareness

A

Our country, and especially Southern New Jersey, face serious and difficult times ahead because of the turmoil of the international oil supply situation. Iran's decision to sell its oil only to the highest bidder has caused a chain reaction of price increases among the oil producing countries. Brief shortages of oil and gasoline will probably result as we tty to adjust to the unavailability of Iranian oil! But more important, the cost of such necessities as home healing oil. gasoline and oil-generated electricity is likely to increase faster than at any time since the 1973 Oil Embargo. Foreign oil producers now have this country at bay. On one hand. America is needlessly relying upon these foreign sources for 50% of our oil energy needs, and we are increasing our reliance every day. On the other hand, according to recent polls, almost two-thirds of our people don't believe that some sort of "ene'-gy crisis" exists. Instead, opinion leaders and government officials have busied themselves trying to find somebody to blame for our energy woes. At Atlantic Electric, we stopped denying the reality of the foreign oil squecreplay long ago. And instead of trying to pin the blame on someone else, we've been doing something about our oil usage. Just live years ago. this utility produced 75% of your electricity with oil. Now thanks loour greater use of coal and nuclear power, we generate about one-third of your electricity with oil. and we re still looking foe ways to reduce our oil reliance. We need your help to reduce our oil consumption further Effective conservation got all of us through the Oil Embargo five years ago. but since then, our customers' conservation efforts haven't helped nearly as much as they once did. We need a renewed and intensive conservation effort from every one of our customers. Every time you save just 15 kilowatt-hours of electricity, you'll prevent us from burning a gallon of imported oil or its equivalent in other fuels. If all of our customers conserved this much electricity a month, we could cut our oil use by 4.320.000 gallons a year, and take a step closer to solving our long term energy supply and cost problems. To help our customers focus their attention on this problem. Atlantic Electric will sponsor the Southern New Jersey activities of Energy Awareness Week. April 30 through May 6. In the weeks to come, you'll be seeing and hearing more from us on the best ways you can conserve energy. ^ Five years ago. conservation helped this nation get through serious oil shortages. Now. saving energy is an economic necessity. We all need lobe keenly aware of our energy problems and of how we can eventually solve them We hope that you will be a concerned and conserving customer through the trying times that lie ahead.

Very truly yours.
