Sideline Shots By The Old Sport

The Old Sport thought it was bad enough when the Physical Education Department had no basketballs available for a game, but now it seems they don’t even have a whistle. Last Monday night, when a whistle was needed for a second referee, a search was made of the whole Phys. Ed. Dept, and not a single whistle could be found anywhere. Why? Are they so expensive that each coach has only one? And does he take it home with him and sleep with it under his pillow? Most coaches in other schtrols have several at their disposal but I suppose the Middle Township budget won't permit such extravagance. The female Phys. Ed. teachers have their five whiles hanging on a hook. Ls this one advantage of the Women's Liberation movement or are they taking care of their whistles? Next week. I’ll be sure to bring all my own equipment. But I can't bring an electric scorRfjoard, and even that was missing last night The Lady Panthers of Middle Township high school are being honored by the Court House Kiwanis Club April 26 for an outstanding basketball record this year. Bill Penman. ’Coach of the Year" will introduce his players and speak on the highlights of the season. This may be a team of destiny as all the starters will be coming back. Perhaps they'll be able to put an end to Ocean City 's dynasty in girl's basketball. Modern sports equipment continues to amaze the Old Sport. Back in the good old days, when there Sea Isle

was pole vaulting or high jumping, a pit was dug and filled with sawdust. Now they fall into an inflated monster called “Cloud Nine" and an air compressor keeps it inflated. (Mi well, that's progress. Coach Exley of varsity

football is “pleised with the progress of the team to date, with the program in full swing and 1979 offense and defense is now formulated." ' Assistants are Norm Smith, Brian Tetley, Paul Yerk. John Kaighri
