Sounds
By Charles P. Lamey
SOUNDS BY CHARLES P. LAMEY The Doors were im porlant to rock history for the way they blended theater and pop music. The Doors were much more of a band than just Jim Morrison's backing musicians. John Densmore's jazz approach to drumming made him unique compared to other late-sixties rock drummers. and Hobby Krieger's flamenco-influenced guitar style had him coming up with unparallclled riffs and solos. Finally, there was keyboardist Rby Man zarek. who might not have been very original, but who could forget his mighty solo during their big hit "Light My Fire?" "An American Prayer" i Elektra-Asylum i is the last project Jim Morrison worked on before his untimely death. He attempted to back his vivid poetry with the music of the Doors, and the end result is quite entertaining, despite sections falling short because ol pretentiousness. Behinfl Morrison's dramatic reading. The Doors play some of their most inspiring music. "An American Prayer" will obviously have a limited audience, but it merits listening. Generation X's first album was strongly influenced by early "Who." yet. thanks to Producer Ian Hunter, the group has now meshed that chord based sound with some hard
driving guitar breaks. The sound is still power-pop at its best, and Billy Idol is one of the stronger vocalists to emerge from England in the past couple of years. If this group would only tour, Generation X would find a large number of people willing to accept them. Their album ‘‘Valley Of The Dolls" (Chrysalis) gets better with repeated

MCA > by The Atlantics is a promising start, as the group writes some stellar pop-rock tunes. Unfortunately. potential classics, such as "Television Girl." “Big City Rock." and. especially. "When You're Young" are ruined, because of thin production and poor mixing. Half the time you can't hear the I miss and drums, and. while Bobby Marron and Bruce Wilkinson have great voices, it's not cnought to save this record. MCA should give The Atlantics a second chance. Last winter. I saw this band rip through four wild sets in their hometown of Boston, and I know there's some great music in them. Too bad none of it’s on ‘‘Big
City Hock.”
