Senate Nixes Gas Ban Ca|var .v orthodox Prpsbytenan
WILDWOOD - The New Jersey Senate has passed and forwarded to the Assembly a measure voicing the state’s formal stand against the proposed closing of gasoline stations on weekends. A bipartisan measure sponsored by Republican Senator James S. Cafiero and Democrat Senate President Joseph Merlino was passed unanimously in the Upper House April 23. Cafiero (R-Cape MayCumberland) prime mover of the legislation, was supported in his efforts by practically every travel and tourism-oriented county, municipality and organization. He said the measure. Senate Concurrent Resolution *8015, memorializes Congress to enact a House Resolution submitted by Congressman William J. Hughes <DSecond District) March &) calling for consideration by the Federal Government of the energy needs of all segments of the economy in the imposition of any fuel allocation plan ot^nther conservation measure. "The thrust of the proposal requests the Government to formulate an energy conservation goal which would permit each state to develop its own individual plan based upon its unique needs," Cafiero explained.
"In view of the threat of weekend service station closings that could destroy vacation, travel and tourism, it is incumbent upon Congress to eliminate this potential threat to the livelihood of so many thousands of our residents." Cafiero said. The Carter Administration is proposing mandatory fuel conservation measures, including possible weekend closing of gasoline service stations and gasoline rationing. This would penalize persons who must work on weekends and ’approximately 4 million of these persons are directly employed in the tourism and travel industry in America. Senators Cafiero and Merlino said. The continued viability of the travel and tourism industry at the Jersey Shore and throughout America depends on the ability of public and private transportation systems to provide safe, economic and reliable facilities and serviced, the resolution emphasized. "Any plan, formulated by the Federal Government. should recognize the sovereignty of the states in permitting each to develop its own individual plan, based upon its unique needs and particular circumstances," Cafiero concluded.
