After two magnificent albums, Graham Parker's career took a nose dive with a weak third and a fourth which shouldn't even have been issues In concert, the impish Parker still drove the audiences wiki, often stealing the show from the headlining act. but his record com pany. Mercury, just couldn't move his albums. Now on Arista, the change seems to have given new life to Parker’s music, as "Squeezing Out Sparks" is one of the finest albums to be released by anyone in the past few years. What makes it good? First, Graham Parker is an overwhelming vocalist, who can handle a smooth ballad as well as a raw rocker and he's absorbed the most effective subtleties from the best sixties legends—especially the black artists on Motown and Stax. Even when one can detect from whom he’s learned, Graham Parker remains his own man. Second is his material. Parker came up with a couple of knockout tracks on early albums, content with using filler. Not here, as every tune, especially "Discovering Japan," ‘•Love Gets You Twisted," and "Waiting For The UFO's," is crying out to be flayed on the radio. Parker has mastered the art of consistently coming up with infectious melodies, without repitition. Finally, comes his

backing band, The Rumour Lead guitarist Brinsley Schwarz is a dynamic musician, who can give depth to any song, and this is certainly proved on "Saturday Night Is Dead." Overall. The Rumour is as tight as a band can be. They don’t try to steal the show from Parker, and their leader should be happy they so obviously believe in his music. It wouldn't be hard to support Parker, as, for my money, there isn’t a v-icalist who can surpass him in performance and in basic feeling for his material. Graham Parker and Tfie Rumour's "Squeezing Out Sparks' < Arista) is sure to be one of 1979's high points. Wish I could say the same about Sweet's "Cut Above 1%; Rest" (Capitol), but it's more directionless heavy metal-pop music. A few clever melodies come to the surface every once in awhile, but never long enough to fully develop. This once amazing singles group ( "Fox On The Run" and 'Ballroom Blitz" are still (lassies) have sunk to their lowest ebb. Overlooking the unlikely name of Jules and The Polar Bears. "Got No Breeding" (Columbia) is a pleasant, straight-forward rock and/oil album Lead vocalist Jules Shear often resembles The Kinks' Ray Davies, but instead of detracting from his per-

formance, the influence seems to aid the material. I'm sure we’ll be hearing more from Jules and The Polar Bears in the coming months.
