AVALON - Fifteen dedicated sand dune preservationists recently planted 6,000 "plugs" of American Cape variety dune grass on the Avalon beachfront between 30th and 31st Street under the direction of Yvonne S. Ballenger, chairman of the Avalon Environmental Commission. Those insignificant looking Httle'plugs' of dune grass will soon grow, spreading their clinging roots to billions of particles of sand which will help to keep the raging ocean at bay during storms that would otherwise do severe darhage to the borough's homes and properties.

Local school children also planted an esteniated 4,000 plants. Mrs. Ballenger has been the chairman of the Environmental Commission for‘three years. Some 100,000 iplugs were planted, the first year. They have helped to build the borough's sand dunes remarkably well over the years. "We have covered just about every dune in the borough at one time or another", Mrs. Ballenger said, “but is something you must keep redoing year aftpryear". Dune grass can stand a wide range of temperatures and a lot of abuse

from nature, but it cannot stand a lot of abuse from man in the way of trampling the stems down Under foot.The Borough has constructed a snow fence that runs beneath the boardwalk to protect, against damage. This will limit access to the beach to tegular paths. The city of Avalon paid for the 10,000 plants and for aerial fertilization. The protection they afford make the cost minimal, Mrs. Ballenger said. Department of Agriculture officials have commented on the excellence of the dune grass ^planted in Avalon, she added.
