Bill Penman and his girls varsity basketball team were honored by the Court House Kiwanis Club at their dinner meeting Thursday night. Coach Penman introduced his team, and mentioned some amusing incidents during the season. Several parents were also in attendance, and a fine night was enjoyed bV all. Middle Twp. Tennis Middle Township has another strong tennis team this year despite the loss of five top players from last year’s team. Under the direction of, John (Jake) Williams, a graduate of William Patterson College, in Wayne, N.J.. the team won its first three matches: beating Hammonton 3-2, Wildwood 5-0, Camden Co. Tech S-O; and then they lost to Ocean City 1-4. Seven players make up the squad. They are rated as follows: Dan Hicks, Mark Tice, Ron and Robert Gabriel, the twins, Lance Harrison, Wayne Roper and Don Penkethman. Coach Williams, who is a learning consultant on the Child Study Team, was born in Riverdale. N.J. and graduated from Butler, N.J. High School. Being a member of the Jersey Cape Racquet Club.'^e was able to secure the use of one court at the club starting MarcTi 1 ronwftTWfrs day. This helped the team considerably, as they were able to work on their basic strokes, the serve, the retwn and the net volley. Coach Williams says, “the team gives a good effort and plays hard.” Vikings Raid Court House Nielsen's Vikings from Avalon made a raid on the mainland Monday night and defeated the Court House Kiwanis by a score of 90-74. Substituting for the Middle Township Police Department, unable to field a team, the Vikings gave the Kiwanis a lesson in running and shooting. Never behind in the game, they poured it on even out rebounding the taller Kiwanians. For the Vikings, Tim Mason was high scorer with 28 points, while Fred Sylvester hat^ 16, Terp 1 Corrigan 14, and Bill Nielsen 12. Also playing for the Vikings were Tom McHale, Jerry MacFarlane, and Fred Bock. Bob Meridith sustained a painful injury when a finger accidentally poled him in the eye. For Kiwanis, Mitch Hand and Kevin Sherman each had 20 points with Billy Hand scoring 16 and Steve Frame 10. Ted Croiter and Mike Stanbach rounded out the team. Kiwanis plays the Press All-Stars on April 30 at the high school gym. Kiwanis won the first game and the Press is out for revenge.
Middle Township High School has a potential track great in Mario Shockley who runs the 100 yard dash, the 220 and does the long jump. He won these three events in the meet with Hammonton. He should make a great record in track at the high school. Mitch Hand is getting some good experience for rfext year by playing with the Court House Hornets. This team has played at the Coast Guard base and at St. Anns Hall in Wildwood. Playing with older men, Mitch has still managed to be a high scorer and play good defense. Mike Fiorucci, besides

being a good soccer player, is a leading cadet in Art Cornell’s Navel Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps. He will probably be a candidate for delegate to Jersey’s Boy’s State, at Rider CoUege in June. This selection is sponsored by the Thurston Elmer Wood Post No. 198 of the American Legion in Court House. Cape Soccer Trounces ‘ Buccaneers CAPE MAY - Soccer Team Lightening struck eight times Saturday morning as the Cape May Hurricane stormed into Cresthaven for a game with the Court House Buccaneers. The expansion team from Cape May picked up the first win in it’s short history in a convincing manner, scoring eight goals and narrowly missing three others. In a well balanced attack, Josh Goldberg and David Lindsey each scored twice and Emmett Harkins, Todd Randle, and Dan MacElrevey each had one. I’he lone Buccaneer score came on a long shot that took a bad bounce catching Hurricane goalie Richard Hawthorne by surprise.
Black drum have started to bite, the first hook-and-line weakfish are already in the fish box and some blue fish have been reported in Delaware Bay. The season is off and running. First reports indicate large schools of weakfish and as one boat operator put it —. we (pund weakies in every slough we passed over in Delaware Bay. It is only a matter of putting together a few warm days and some settled weather before the whole bay breaks open. Netters began picking up good numbers of fish and the size indicates a good run of weaxs. TwdLin the 20-lb. class were caught in nets and a lot of the net fish have been in the 10-11 lb. class. The first two , weaks reported to us on roa and reel were those caught aboard Tom Roberts’ boat "My Gal,” and they hit a diamond jig in the ocean while Roberts wtfs out on a mackerel trip. The first drum reports were handed to us Monday morning, with Doug Bright, of Cape May Court House boating three and Dave Westcott, on the "Top Drawer" out of Roseman’s Marina. Cape May, reporting one drum. Jim’s Bait and Tackle Shop in Cape May weighed in the fish.
All in all, prospects are good for an interesting transition period while the fish move in and out of the area. Water temperature and water conditions are fc the key. Good weather prospects up the chances for weaks and drum and bad weather wind and cold may keep the macks around for su/ few more days. r Square Club Meeting AVALON - Avalon Square Club meeting 8:30 p.m..
